Beaujolais Nouveau

BJ
I know it's not de rigueur, but I don't care. I think it's a great tradition and a fun way to reflect on the year with friends and drink some fresh pure wine.

Cafe Campagne tonight - the new Foillard (who knew?) and the Chermette and a little glass of Drouhin. The Foillard was brett flawed and expensive. What's up with these Lynch Beaujolais producers - the Morgonians are starting to have issues across the board. The Chermette was delicious as always. The Drouhin was simple. Cafe Campagne continues to be a very enjoyable place serving up consistently great food at a reasonable price - it seems like we default there all the time. They had a lovely saussicon in brioche tonite that was really good.

The B-N party at Pichet is always a blast but we were just too laid back for that tonight. But I highly recommend it, if you can get in.

You and Mmll L should be here tonight, BJ. A nouveau delight evening with all the preferred suspects. I have great memories of the Pacalet's to begin with, from last year, but the Lapierre maggies were not far behind.

The Foillard sucks. It's lean and green. I couldn't get past that to even care if it had brett.

I've had the P-U-R Primeur a couple of times. It's terrific.

the chermette noveau was quite nice - we sold a ton of it at the shop yesterday.

Which one? Sold a whole lot more of the "Veilles Vignes" than the regular bottling. Nouveau from old vines still amuses my inner child.

Agreed with Larry.

The Foillard is majorly disappointing. P-U-R is just a great bottle of Beaujolais, regardless of its Nouveau status.

the depeuble (sp?) nouveau from kermit fully rocks.

Absolutely agree. Wonderful with roasted/braised 14 hour pork shoulder (in-bone) and also with grilled mackeral, gres de champagne cheese, etc.

Sounds like the nouveau spent almost as much time in the tank as the pork shoulder spent in the oven (continuing with the instant gratification meme from another thread).

-Eden (sounds like it's worth giving the Dupeuble a shot later this week)

Had a taste of the P-U-R the other night and would whole heartily agree. I didn't get the exact details on where the grapes are sourced but this nouveau surely has its roots in Morgon. OTOH if nouveau is a window into what the 2011 vintage will be, and if this P-U-R is any indication, what does it foretell, if anything, that a nouveau can be this developed?

from Selection Massale's release missive for the P-U-R nouveau:

From Cyril Alonso and Florian Looze little venture in the beaujolais, P-U-R is producing a Beaujolais Nouveau from extremely old vines located in the village of Lantigne, just above Morgon. One parcel only, composed by 90% of vines planted in 1904, and some replanting. Cyril says he doesn't know of an older parcel of gamay in the region, and we are very excited he's making his nouveau out of it. The grapes were harvested mid september, in perfect conditions, fermented in cement tanks and bottled yesterday, after barely a month in between. No sulfur was added at any moment of the fermentation, nor at bottling, and Cyril believe it's "Sublime. Fluid, dark, and pure".
We understand the bad reputation that "beaujolais nouveau" got over the years, as a lot of it is just made from cheap fruit, oversulfured, over yeasted and is just not good, but we do believe that if made the right way, these can be great wines. Two month ago, when we visited Cyril, i asked him if he still had some nouveau from 2010, and we proceed to drink the whole thing (with some iberico ham and a few menthol cigarettes...) and buy some to bring back to the states. Not only the wine was still good, fresh and vibrant, but it had time to go as well. Beaujo nouveau all year long!

Opened a bottle on Thanksgiving, and I can only echo the compliments on this page. Super good.

Closer to Regnie rather than Morgon.

I had some 2011 Nouveau the other day from Durdilly (had never heard of them but they are apparently imported by Skurnik). That was some pungent stuff. I didn't dig it.

I'm a little puzzled. If one has such good and venerable vines why not make something more durable or interesting than Nouveau?

A Beaujolais Villages 'Tres Vieilles Vignes' was made from the same parcel.

Why not? Wine is meant to be drunk.
