Some Beaujolais notes from early 2012

Nice stuff indeed. Good wine bar documentation. That really is a good website. I hope it gets archived somewhere and doesn't eventually disappear.

And once again one is struck by how human/humane the pricing can be in some French wine establishments.

Funny, I was just talking about wine pricing with someone who runs a speakeasy (i.e. unlicensed, invite only, great selection of booze). They pour a great selection of sakes (including aged ones), some interesting beer (mostly home-brewed) and we will start supplying them with some Pineau d'Aunis and Romorantin. They charge a flat fee for entrance, tips optional, drink all you can, with free finger food. No one gets too drunk, and the vibe is good.

Sometimes they host dinners and they mark up the wines by about ten dollars a bottle. They encourage BYO for the same price.

Everyone else we sell to marks up by >100%, and in many places by as much as 300%.

So in that case, the speakeasy folks are not as concerned about maximizing profit. Which is also the attitude one gets in many French wine establishments.

Of course I know it's more complicated than that. As imported wine in the US will carry all sorts of additional costs and have a different place in our culture than Beaujolais wine in Villié-Morgon.

Nonetheless, one can't help but be struck by the greater accessibility to the average earner in comparison to what happens in the US, especially those by-the-glass prices. I mean Foillard et al by the bottle in wine shops are more than what the average French person wants to spend on wine. But 2-3 euros per glass is just so accessible!

I think it varies but about 100-125ml, so 6-7 pours per bottle. They probably make a profit on most of the bottles by the 3rd glass.

It's brilliant - no one is going to be worried about spending 2 or 3 euros.
