Pete,
Have you given up commenting on the wines? I'd be very interested to hear about several of them, even if some only for snarky reasons.

I think he's drawn the veil out of consideration for delicate lurkers and newbies.

I used to like Les Cailloux back in the day. The 01 isn't as objectionable as some other years. I wouldn't have minded tasting the Beaucastel at all. There, some non-snarky comments.

Those 2002 Cote Rotie wines are pretty interesting, especially since the vintage was almost entirely written off because of biblical floods that summer.

Mark, Here you go, as best I can recall (and there is nothing worthy of snarkiness...except maybe with my comments but not with the wines)...

André Clouet Champagne Brut Rosé NV -- Salmon color, lively and lovely bouquet, complex melange of fruits maybe strawberries/cherries/etc., stern dry style, citrus nuances, terrific. [E]

E Guigal Condrieu '09 -- Straw color, mildly complex aromas, peaches, flowers, tropical fruits, some richness, fair structure, could be longer, enticing acidity, very food friendly (except with the blueberry sauce). [VG - E]

Brunel Les Cailloux Chateauneuf-du-Pape '01 -- Dark red, solid dark fruits, black cherries, smooth texture, lots of life, nicely evolved but still developing, balanced, black berries. [E]

Michel & Stéphane Ogier Côte-Rôtie '02 -- Dark red, blueberries and black fruits, luscious scents, lovely purity, beguiling fruits, all the right Cote Rotie elements, defies the notion of 2002 being a difficult year. [E]

Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc '07 -- Yellow gold, intense and complex aromas, citrus fruits, fine nuttiness, floral notes, very full bodied, good spice, a wonderful pairing with the cheeses (especially the Beaufort), astonishingly good even to a huge Rhone enthusiast. [E]

Domaine La Tour Vieille Banyuls '03 -- Dark red, dark plums, raspberries, chocolate, floral tones, dark fruits, fine richness, well integrated at this time, everything anyone could wish for and nothing could be better with chocolate. [E]

Marc, Perhaps someone can verify or otherwise refute, but I believe I recall that Ogier didn't make their top cuvee in 2002 but just blended all the fruit together.

In any event, this wine was a success.

Be careful, Marc. You don't want to get the vintage chart police's panties all wadded up.

Marc,
The flooding was mostly limited to the Southern Rhone, where it was truly an execrable vintage (maybe even an egregious one!). While it wasn't a "great" year in the Northern Rhone, good wine could be made there that year.

Mark, thanks for the reminder that the big floods were in the South that year.
I remember there was something bad about 02 in the North, maybe hail storms or generally wet weather or something.

Pete, I heard the same story about Ogier that year, all the grapes went into the basic bottle.
