Two blind Texiers

Two different people last night had been following the whole foofaraw and decided to blind us on Texier reds.

The 1999 Hermitage (you all know the rumors as to the source of the fruit) showed dull and a bit heavy. Either far too young or not going anywhere. Nothing like my last bottle.

The 2001 Cote Rotie showed gorgeously. Minerally, complex, floral, young. Lots of people were reaching to get another pour before the wine was unveiled on the assumption that it was something grand. And we were right.

I don't get to try as many Texier wines as I would like (to my chagrin) but his Cote Rotie's have always been exceptional - at least the ones I have tasted.
I still have several bottles of the 1999 in my cellar and I can't think of another wine in that cave that I treasure more.
Best, Jim

Well, if you visited more, that wouldn't be a problem. Tell Ian to get on it.

On a separate note, John Sprow, visiting Durham, walked in off the street today. That was nice.

What are the rumors?

That it is Chave grapes.
I have a bottle of this left and I don't like the reports that it is not showing well. I loved the other bottle I had.

Jay, did you give the '99 much air? Granted it's been a few years, but the last time I opened a bottle it was so much better on day two. Day one it was rather muted with red fruit and day two it became pretty flamboyant with sweet black fruit.

Ian barely listens to me anymore, unless I say the magic words - La Ciccia.
Sprow; who'd a thunked?

It was a total mind fuck.

Sent him down to Rue Cler. He was freaked out at what downtown Durham looks like now and that he could eat at a place like Rue Cler in downtown (or Mateo, or Pizzeria Toro).

I do not believe the '99 was decanted in advance. Also, the person that brought it informed me that it was much better the next day.

Yes, so this bodes well. Apparently just needs time. Or a long decant.
