Evangelho is just west of the Antioch Bridge (which crosses the San Joaquin), and just south of some evil-looking old factory like thing.

Yeah, that's the oil refinery. OK, so I know that country pretty well. Cool, never knew!

Just reading up on the vineyard - looks like that's a natural gas power plant. The glories of the fossil fuel economy! Bringing an end to our civilization, yay!

what wine fits the restaurant? never been.

Sorry, I meant Dashe. Mental slip -- two of the relatively few Zin producers I like! Restaurant is Mexican, but some dishes are not too spicy and, IMO, offer a lot of flexibility in wine pairing.

Just rereading this thread. That evil looking thing is actually a natural gas powered electrical powerplant, not an oil refinery. Not sure what I was thinking.

Interesting story about the PG&E power plant: it is a big reason why Evangelho wasn't ripped up and turned into a housing development.

The original family that owned Evangelho sold the vineyard to PG&E in the '50s. A farmhand that used to work the vineyard, Manuel Evangelho, purchased 11 acres of it and then leased the remaining from PG&E. And so it was until Bedrock bought those 11 acres from Manuel Evangelho's son and took over the PG&E lease.

Apparently, PG&E wanted to keep Evangelho in place because it acts as a buffer zone for the power plant, keeping housing from getting too close. Here's a quote from an article:

"Paradoxically, Evangelho’s saving grace is not its cult following, but the function it serves for the PG&E power plant. Jake explains that the vineyard exists, and will continue to exist because PG&E wants it to continue serving as a buffer to housing developments. Bedrock leases another nearby vineyard from the Contra Costa Water District, who similarly keeps it as a buffer to the water treatment plant. It’s less about heritage than insurance liabilities, but such is heterotopian life."

Here's the full story (a great read):

That is super interesting Yule, thanks for sharing. I had no idea of the back story.

Love the first photo - pure Antonioni.

My family has oldish Antioch (the town the vineyard is in) and Evangelho-proximate roots. My stepdad, and his father before him, owned and ran the local Ford dealership, which they started in 1956, using the proceeds of several gas stations his Dad had operated in Berkeley. Definitely old school CA - they were something of a go-to for Valley farmers buying their next F100 or 150 (back when those were actually tools rather than wannabe pseudo-military vehicles). My stepdad also was a big part of the Winter Island duck hunting lodge - pretty much his winters revolved around it. Winter Island was just upriver from the powerplant, and thus Evangelho. For his 80th I bought him a bunch of Evangelho from Mike Dashe, Bedrock, and Sandlands - fun stuff.
