Patrick's new gig, NYC PSA

We drank the Kartauserhof 2002 Spat which is in a beautiful place now. The acidity is still vibrant but not so sharp. The fruit has spread out and warmed up a little. Pretty.

Love. This. Wine. Last time I had it, I picked up a bottle directly from Christoph Tyrell (eu12), and ended up drinking it in St. Petersburg a few days later. Wines deserve stories.

Oh, yeah. One more thing. Silly noisy music being played. Loud enough to interfere with conversation. My partner made a, um , er, unambiguous request for them to lower it, which they did.

Well, that's a big negative for me. Drat. We were thinking of trying to get there in a week or two.

Go on the early side. They heeded Jim's request.

I've never understood this impulse for restaurants. Do they think that it somehow enlivens the atmosphere to have intrusively loud music piped in? To me, restaurants are a place to dine and talk, and anything that interferes with that is, to me, an annoyance.

I think that they see it as lively, energetic, buzzing ambience. Of course, people have to talk up and they'll probably gesture more grandly, too. And there is the eat-more/talk-less angle.

And I understand that many people come to a restaurant to have a good time, and not merely to chew in solemn contemplation. There should be a middle ground. Perhaps quieter and noisier hours; perhaps a room with fewer speakers; etc.

Really happy the NY Times gets it.

Time Out did a hatchet job that made no sense including a picture of an empty restaurant.

Thankfully no one takes them seriously.

Congrats to them on an awesome NYT review!

I find it funny, though, that every review I've read mentions the music in the place. And oddly enough, all the music they've written about would have been better than the night I went. Allman Bros, Byrds, Stones, Motown and Doo-wop... All that would have been better than the c-list late 90s Alt-rock I got. Marcy's Playground, Harvey Danger, late period-Weezer. There was probably Silverchair, too... ugh. Crap then and still crap.

Music aside, the octopus was outstanding and I liked the duck confit tots. And, well, the wine list... Not too much to add there. Bangin' as some might say.

Tonight it was the soundtrack for Breakfast Club. And a bit too loud for my taste, but they were also rocking their review, so you couldn't rain on their parade. Nice to see everyone so psyched.

Yes, I think until son-of-Gilt is back up and running.

PS, son-of-Gilt is on its own, wine-wise. Pcap is a downtown denizen now.

Of course, they have a fab inventory to work through, so we'll see what happens.

Actually, this is a flaw.

Oh, I saw them giving good service to many tables, but if you were in the know, you could see that they were dancing instead of standing still.
