(no title)

In Napa we're getting down to the last of the Mohicans. I'm thinking that Travers may very well be the last of the older winemakers who don't like too much new oak, over ripe grapes, high alcohol, etc. There are others with his philosophy but Travers is from a different time.

Holy shit. Banks (former Screaming Eagle owner) bought Mayacamas. The Travers aren't sticking around. This sucks out loud

Banks is posting over at WineBerserkers, steadfastly maintaining that there will be no change of style.
Curiously, while doing that he is also posting that "there is significant room for improvement".

Can't help but worry.
It's not like we're drowning in a wealth of choices when it comes to this type of Napa Cab.

Not at all. Plenty of choices. Mayacamas 2010, Mayacamas 2007, Mayacamas 2004. I could probably come up with a few more if you give me time.

Yeah, there is that.
But, like Steve, I thought Bob Travers would always be there. Mayacamas Cab done "that way" may have just become a non-renewable resource.

See, for instance, Figeac.

Ironically, over at eBob, when everyone was cheering the recent change at Figeac, I was a typical killjoy and posted that I was going off to drown my sorrows in a glass of Mayacamas Cab.

What does one drink now that Mayacamas may also be going the way of the Dodo?

Best, Jim
I haven't seen Pete Miner in a couple of years. I've heard he was not doing well but I really don't have any current info. I've heard his son has been pretty much running the winery. I used to see Pete on a regular basis at the chamber music recitals in Napa. I can ask John Kongsgaard when I see him next time.

Try a Corison cab. Where do you live?

Good choice.
I live in Hokkaido, but happen to have some Corison on hand (as well as Canon and Rougeard).

Slightly worried, though, that if I turn to Corison for some solace I'll wake up some day soon to the news that Cathy has sold to Constellation.

I'm starting to worry. Is Spain the only place where former overripeness-overextraction-overoaking fiends are toning their acts down, and some even making drinkable wine? Is all this pessimism justified?

Pessimism is always justified.
Just received this note from Decanter, which is having its Wine Awards event. The last part of the last sentence is something a magazine wouldn't have mentioned at all three or four years back. I think it means some optimism is justified, as the message is coming through louder and louder:

"DWWA 2013: Experts deliberate highest number of entries as judging week continues
With two thirds of the wines tasted at the Decanter World Wine Awards, panellists are by turns pleased with the quality of the offering, and disappointed by wines that still show too much intervention by winemakers."
