A brief visit to Manhattan is coming up. I'm looking at MAS Farmhouse for dinner, where I am instructed to show up wearing "elegant casual" attire. As I have now been living in Appalachia for nearly 10 years, I no longer have any notion of what this actually means. Thinking about Sorella, too, since Ms. Bowman apparently approves.

Thank y'all.

Jeans and a clean shirt (with a collar) and shoes that don't show your toes wil be fine at Mas. But, of all the gin joints that serve food in New York county, never mind the whole City, why there?

fun = rouge tomate & their tasting menu. ate there last week and really enjoyed it. stellar wine list.

weirdly fun = alder. the food is good starting point for conversations about the possibilities of food. and tasty, too.

Agree and you could add:
Pearl & Ash
Trestle on 10th
Seasonal
Barbuto (as long as the weather is nice)
Annisa
Ma Peche
NoMad (expensive, but no more than Mas and much more fun)
Maysville
Bolud Sud
La Vie en Sezchuan (byo)

And probably dozens more.

rouge tomate tasting menu, almost made the mistake of not going with the pairings by Pascaline

Boulud Sud (dinners) and Bar Boulud (brunch/lunch) are good

Listen to Mr. Wallace!

I would give both Mas and Sorella a miss. There are too many other exciting places in New York right now.

How many meals do you have?

I like the other Mas (LG) well enough!

Can mortals get into Ma Peche yet?

You're thinking of Ko, Jeff.

Fwiw, I've always found Ma Peche the weakest link in the group.

Guess you haven't been to Noodle Bar recently.

Má Pêche is still doing good food, and a few finds still on the wine list ('08 Chalasses Marnes Bleues two weeks ago was just swell).

Many thanks. My travel companion, The Chef, says she doesn't care if she never sees another duck egg sitting on a slab of pork for the rest of her life. This will help with that. (She is also deeply suspicious of heavily tattooed young men offering "comfort food." Down here in Asheville we have had a plague of these over the last year.)

Hallelujah. Going to NY to eat fetishized Southern food has always struck me as odd.

Probably just Friday night, but maybe Saturday lunch too. I'm copying Kirk's list right now, many thanks.

Eating it in Asheville has gotten mighty OLD! (PS: Coming out after the 4th of July to visit your Cave.)

Asheville

Bumpkin? Please. That's where all the smart New Yorkers have gone.

I still wear my Carhartts sometimes when I look for mushrooms in blackberry bushes.

I suspect you and the Chef would very much enjoy Annisa. No tattoos; few young men. Maybe none in the kitchen.

David, I also tend to avoid patronizing venues with heavily tattooed chefs.

Does the kitchen staff come out and strip for your inspection?
