Sharon, what are you waiting for?
We are having the best summer weather in probably 50 years out here.
Of course the rains started up yesterday, but that just means chanterelles will be popping soon.

Ooooh.

Thanks everyone. We are only in Seattle for a day prior to a week on Lummi Island.

OMG, all of my relatives live on Lummi Island and I have never been there.

Wow for an Island with a population of 800 people everyone seems to know someone there.

Strange, huh?

Amusing, though. You're sure to run into some Bowmans.

I know nothing of Vif.

And yet it is less than a half mile from my house.

I am intrigued.

Shawn Mead and Lauren Feldman are the proprietors. Shawn was the west coast sales director for Louis/Dressner. Lauren baked and cooked at a bunch of places and would always cater the annual LDM trade tasting.

I haven't been yet, but if it is anything other than awesome, I'll be shocked.

The Walrus and Carpenter is a place I like a lot.

Pichet, of course.

Oh, and I get local privileges in Seattle. [G]

Yes, VLM gets native status.

And here Shawn and Lauren open a wine shop actually more like 1/4 mile from us and I am clueless.

Ignore me. I am nothing.

And to think a visitor scooped you.

Willows had the coup of being put on a list of 10 restaurants in the world worth flying to get to in the NYT a couple years back, hence all the attention. Chef came from Noma, I believe.
The food is outrageously good. They unfortunately pair local food with local wines which only tend to work out so-so for the disorderly palate. I think they at least were pouring Teutonic and Memmaloose over the past weeks. I'd recommend bringing a couple bottles that pair well with light seafood focused fare.

Robert do send us locals us a line if you are looking for other recs in the area. I'm guessing you will want to get of the island once or twice in a whole week there (just a 15 minute ferry ride), and there's lots to do around here. Marc D and I are very close by.

Ate at Munir in Ballard with my family the other night and liked it a lot. Lebanese food and whiskey bar (!?). Nice selections of mezze perfect in their simplicity. Delicious savory pastries. $10 corkage.
Probably not the place for a single night in town, but very nice if you are there a couple days.
Regarding wine shops, no one loves Esquin for the wine (a large warehouse-y looking place with remarkably little interest despite the huge selection), but I went in for the first time since the state freed up liquor sales and their spirits selection is ridiculous. close to a dozen Amari, a wall of scotch, tons of well chosen digestivs, + the first place Ive found Gran Classico in the state. Finally I can make myself a proper negroni!

The Willows Inn was one of the best meals I have ever had. Amazing restaurant! I can't believe the Chef is only 27. He worked at Noma for three years and also at Manresa. He also has amazing ingredients to work with. The whole staff is extremely relaxed and enthusiastic.

The wine list is still a work in progress. Corkage is only $35 which for a restaurant of this calibre is not bad. I brought one wine and ordered one off the list (Cameron Chardonnay). I am going back tonight and I am bringing two.

Bowmans are indeed famous on the Island! I actually know of one through my day job.

As for Seattle I was curious about the two restaurants that made Bon Appetites top ten new restaurants list - The Whale Wins and Joule. Since they are both in the same building, I tried them both. Nice restaurants. I have to say though I don't think they would be in the Top 10 new restaurants of 2013 in NYC let alone the country.

Snacks:

Samish Bay Mussel
Crispy crepe with salmon roe
Halibut skin
Kale with black truffle and rye (amazing dish - truffle is not from the Island)
King Salmon belly
Grilled Shiitake
Smoked sockey
Hearth bread with pan drippings
Blackberries with with wild grasses
Flax Bites

Dinner:

Venison leg with purslane and rye (served tartare)
Summer salad of basis and nasturtiums
Wild seaweeds braised with dungeness crab and brown butter
Dry aged duck with beets glazed in red currants
Huckleberries with woodruff and malt

If walking is your thing, the hike to the high point on the south side of the island offers some very nice views west Orcas and the rest of the San Juans. Likely some chantrelles too with the rain of late!

They seem to pull off the rare combo of first rate food in a relaxed atmosphere very well at the Willows. My brother, visiting recently, asked how he should go about eating one of the bites that he was served there. The server told him to just stick the whole thing in his mouth like a dorito...

We did do that hike and you are right chanterelles were out and a few others that I need to identify.

Dinner 2 was equally spectacular. 07 Overnoy Ploussard was a perfect match for the food.

On Saturday we went to Orcas Island. Nice place with a number of good restaurants. We ate lunch at Rose's Bakery and Cafe. They have a very good wine selection in the store with a number of Rosenthal and Kermit Lynch selections. 2011 Lapierre Morgan was fantastic.

We also sat next to Joe Walsh, Jeff Lynne and Richard Donner who has a house on the Island.

Sorry to be heading back to NYC. One of the most beautiful areas in this country.

Rose's is the best. I slowly have cleaned John, the owner, out of his back vintages of Lynch imports (and even some LD). He sells vintage Sabatiers and Dexters in the kitchen shop and is an old school aficionado of the best sort, and a great guy.

Strangely, we just drank an '11 Lapierre today from Vita's on Lopez (where we've been for the last week). It was good, but had been sitting in the heat for a while and I don't believe it was in the best condition. But Lopez for week, wow. Very quiet kayaking water early in the week. Some very nice birding. On Friday we found ourselves in the middle of a school of Harbor Porpoises.

Sorry we missed you! I take off Weds. but if you happen to be in town tomorrow nite and want to do a mellow jeeb, just say the word.

Yeah, a pretty accurate commentary on the Seattle food scene. That is weird they got that kind of support - they are fine, but just decent local restaurants.
