attendees: Jeff & Dena, Ross, Don, Jay, Brad, Jeff
We are deep in Chinatown. This time we are meeting Jeff & Dena at Ping's Seafood. Service is good although the only wow dish is the fried rice (which arrives inexplicably late, way after all the other food has been served, eaten, and the plates bussed). So it goes.
We had some wow wines, though:
Trimbach 2001 Riesling VT "Cuvee Frederic Emile" - great acidity, apricotty but really more complicated than that, very long finish, outstanding bottle
F. Chidaine 2009 Montlouis "Les Lys" - a somewhat rare bottling; delicate orange blossom and a hint of lychee, acidity is very soft, however
Huet 1996 Vouvray Sec "Le Mont" - a forceful wine but double-decanted 5 hours ahead so showing more gracefully, marzipan and yellow fruit, tangy and tight, do not open anytime soon
A. Foreau 1955 Vouvray Doux - so sweet! burned caramel and cork taint... damn
S. Magnien 2011 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er "Aux Petites Noix" - bright acidity but very shut down, just a hint of buttery oak showing (bleh)
Huet 1957 Vouvray Demi-Sec "Le Clos du Bourg" - not so sweet as the label might lead you to think, clear and crisp, subtle, others liked this more than me
O. Raffault 1979 Chinon - nice older franc still showing some pyrazines, good acidity (not high, not low), somewhere in the background there's leather and tobacco, a gentle drink
P. Foreau 1996 Vouvray Moelleux - Look! Young Loire wine! bright, yellow-fruited, sweet and easy, ahhh
Miller-Catoir 2001 Haardter Burgergarten Riesling Spatlese - 09 02, spritzy at age 12? suave, good acidity, a bit on the ripe side
J. J. Prum 1976 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel - 30 77; elixir, no words can do this justice, an example of why we buy wine
Dom. Baumard 1971 Quarts de Chaume - sweet, good, but lacks intensity, still not sure why Brad likes this house so much
