CULINARY DELIGHTS

I'm a big fan of Tarentaise. Closest domestic thing to Beaufort or a good reserve-type Comte. I've never cared for anything from Cowgirl Creamery though.

Keith, This sampling reinforces your opinion as the Cowgirl Creamery was the least likable of the three selections. Decent but very unremarkable!

The other two were excellent.

Kay, First, I'll say I'm biased because I think so highly of Antony Barton and like Leoville Barton so much.

At this luncheon, the Leoville Bartons were singing in each flight...my favorites each time.

I had long ago picked the Leoville Barton 2000 as the wine of the vintage. Each sampling since then, including at this luncheon, validated (in my mind, at least) my assessment of this great wine.

Red Hawk is a terrific cheese. Unfortunately, it's become difficult to find one that's ripe enough at my usual shops. They're way too firm. They should be like Epoisse, aroma-wise. There's no place at home where I can ripen one without it making the entire house too fragrant.

I'll say the same for Mt. Tam. I always found it boring until someone served me a perfectly ripe specimen recently - it was really all about the texture, which was like soft butter. Not in the same league as the Red Hawk, but very appealing when it's on.

I've spent this year tasting through all the 2000 Bordeaux I bought way back when, some for the first time. The Barton is definitely up there though I think Pichon-Lalande has been my favorite - Pauillac silk.
Unfortunately I didn't buy any first growths but I guess if I had I wouldn't own them anymore anyway.

Agreed. Along with Winnimere it's one of my favorites.

If you're talking about US cheeses in general don't ignore Landaff. A very different style but extremely satisfying and surprisingly good red wine match.

Landaff is easily one of my favorite domestic cheese. Great call
