Rudy trial starts

Sure, but Koch could almost turn you around when you get up close.

Sure do wish they'd chased a certain auctioneer around the UWS with handheld cameras.

Fucking JK (perfect, huh?) will be in CNBC with his picks of 2013 and outlook for the market 2014. Unfuckingbelievable. I have no sympathy for anyone involved in this. Kill 'em all, let the noodle sort it out.

Wow, how odious is this?

I have viewed CNBC with contempt since the days when I used to be a guest--all they care about is hyping the day's latest event and pumping the hot stock. But having the total crooks on to tell you to run out and buy DRC? Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, as you might say this morning, that is going pretty far.

I wonder if he wants to buy back some of the fraudulent wine he's sold *me* as a future investment?

This particular delta bravo has skated by completely untouched:

"Finishing 2013 yet again as the #1 fine and rare wine auction firm in the world, Acker Merrall's December 20th auction at A Voce in NYC confirmed that fact while slightly exceeding expectations with over $2.3 million and 94% sold. An OWC of 1982 Chateau Lafite Rothschild was the #1 lot of the auction, selling for $36,900 with 5 bottles of Roumier's very rare 1993 Musigny in the #2 spot, selling for $29,500, while a rare OWC of 1976 DRC Assortment was the third top lot at $24,600. Wines from Screaming Eagle, Henri Jayer, Chateau Petrus and J.F. Mugnier rounded out the Top Ten lots of the sale.

Burgundy continues to sizzle. Magnums of 1993 Mugnier Musigny hammered for $14,760, well over a high estimate of $10,000 and a case of 1985 DRC Romanee St. Vivant sold for $20,910 compared to a pre-sale high estimate of $16,000."

Repulsive.

Speaking of interesting pointsThe estimable Don Cornwell summarizes a bit more of the case against JK and AMC.

Just in case you wanted it all in one spot.

One aspect he does not discuss/consider is whether JK and AMC may have entered into an agreement with prosecutors extending the statute of limitations. (I'm not sure this can be done in criminal cases, but it frequently is done in civil cases.) The advantage to JK and AMC is that it avoids adverse publicity resulting from an indictment; the advantage to the government is that it can continue to gather evidence and, especially, it can observe how the Koch case plays out.

One of the supposed advantages of the "information age" and the free flow of low cost information from many sources is supposed to be the unmasking of fraudulent practices or dubious claims such as the auctioned wines featured in this thread. The information age cheerleaders believe that the availability of diverse information on the internet will eliminate Stieglitzian information asymmetry. Well, here is an interesting test case. There is plenty of easily available information that should drive down the perceived value or quality of Acker Merrill auction products, unless they take some dramatic new steps to guarantee authenticity. It will be an interesting 2014 for the behavioral economics of the wine auction market.

There are some agents in HK still buying at auction to sell on to Mainland Chinese, so I do not think the market will weaken. There's not been much in the Mandarin wine press on this issue (although most of the papers covered the case via the wires). It's profoundly depressing.

You would think the telegraph would have reached London by now, but commercial and perhaps psychological motives dictate not.

The old Upton Sinclair saw surely applies:

"It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it."

With the Rudy supply dried up, Acker has apparently had to resort to desperate measures to satisfy demand for ultra-rare Clos de la Roche:

Lot 7352. Clos de la Roche - Vintage 2006

T. Puzelat
KO
1wc
Above 6 bottles
Per Lot: USD $ 500 - 700
