What did you drink tonight?

1983 Couleé de Serrant Savennieres, from a cache of bottles that had not only been heat damaged but also suffered through a flood at the wine shop. Pretty rough looking fill, even for a thirty year old bottle, but this is by far the best of the bunch so far. Honey, flowers and stones on the nose, in the mouth it is at first piercing but gentle at the end, verging on oranges. Maybe some botrytis. With seared scallops over leeks and mushroom it is heaven.

This does sound like heaven, or at least its cafeteria.

drinking a 1998 Cotes-du-Rhone-Villages from Domaine Sainte-Anne, and am humbled at the sense that I'd nearly forgotten how lovely this wine is. Largely Grenache with a little Mourvedre and Syrah, and a very small amount of Cinsault. Though far beyond the charms it offered in its primary, youthful state around the early '00s, it has not lost a bit of freshness, and it's wonderfully beguiling in its more mature state. Plenty of grip, and intensity to match the ripeness of '98, with impeccable balance, and grace. Fabulous with a roasted chicken and salad, on a warm night in March, in drought-stricken California.
Must have cost all of $10 or $11 at retail, on release.

I absolutely love their wine.

Any sense of what it's like currently? My last bottles were 01s.

Vieux Telegraphe 1981-1988 last night. Yup, all 8 vintages.

6 of the wines were very, very good to utterly fantastic. The only one that showed some considerable over-the-hillness was the '85. However, it still hadn't lost some fruit sweetness. 1986 had a bit too much band-aid brett. 1984 and 1987 were a touch chunky and coarse compared to the ones I liked better, but I would be happy to drink either of those. 1981-3, and 1988 were totally amazing. Texture, complexity, finish. Completely seamless. Those four wines were the total package. By no means do they need to be drunk now.

I had an 88 VT from magnum from a generous friend a month ago. It was also fabulous and amazingly young, even for a VT, at 25 years old. I had assumed that was due to the magnum. Maybe I'm just not crediting VT with its full aging potential.

88 VT is great stuff.

Also open: 2010 Chateau du Hureau Saumur-Champigny "Tuffe" is a lean, herbal scented cabernet franc. Tremendous match with lamb and white bean chili. Raspberry fruit, beautiful stem tannin.

I really like everything Hureau is doing. But for under $20 the Tuffe is amazing everyday fare.

Yes!

Last night, the seven days old remains of a natural corked bottle of Jean Paul's 05 l'Ancien...still going strong! This wine is starting to settle past its early density - I predict greatness in 6-7 years.

With lamb sausage, 01 Charbonniere CdP VV - great stuff, old vine vinosity. The 01 CnPs are so good these days...drinking lots and lots of them...

I had one of the l'Ancien '05s a month ago and it was indeed tasty.

one thing about Ira, there is no predicting what he'll open

05 bize savigny aux vergelesses - the real deal, although the bottle had been opened for a week, so who knows on which day it became drinkable; I don't know for sure that this was not entirely destemmed, but I suspect it wasn't which does the trick with all that 05 fruit

06 bourgogne roty - just give it another 5 years and it will be ready; what you want from a bourgogne, right?

02 lucien crochet sancerre rouge cuvee prestige - would someone please just make a plain and simple pinot noir over there? or at least try to?

You know, it's funny. I find myself more annoyed by simple aldehydes in regular wines, and there are very few things that have been open for a long time that I can drink.

2003 Bosconia - Dark. Porty nose. On the first night so volatile that I can barely stand it (and I like Musar). It opens a bit on the second night: nose still porty but palate is broader and deeper, VA down quite a bit (probably just being overwhelmed by fruit). Two more nights to go.

Hmmm, have I ever heard of that before?

Let me think....

While we're at it, let's throw in the mid-'90s Bise sweeties, which have turned out to be just fine.

I finally started to open some of my 97s (QdC and CdLs) and other than the color they were all fine.
