What did you drink tonight?

Monday:
'98 Bosquet des Papes "Chantemerle" CdPape - In a resolved, easy to drink stage. No sense of heat from the alcohol from when I last tasted '98s (probably a couple of years ago). Drink and hold, but I'm going to drink sooner than later.

Last night with Kane, Jon Cook (yes, he lives!), Kira, Rob Adler and Sandy Crozier:

'89 Cote-Rotie, Jasmin - Classic, old school Syrah. Nice and porky. Based on this bottle, drink or hold

'94 Beaucastel - Some Beaucastel funk, but well under control. It blossomed over the course of a couple of hours. More fruit, less funk. Drink or Hold.

'98 Dom. de la Janasse "Chaupin" CdPape - See description above for Bosquet. Seems like '98s are finally coming into their own. The 15 year rule?

'01 Nuits-St-Georges "Aux Murgers", Cathiard - Starting to display some nice secondary notes, but if you got 'em, drink something else in the meantime.

'55 Rioja Vieja Riserva, Bilbainas ((I believe I have that right on which bottling) - Superb, still fresh. Really came into its own after a couple of hours.

One of these a couple months ago was really lithe and fresh, almost gamay-ish. Really enjoyed it quite a bit. I didn't see much point in aging them further.

05 bize savigny aux vergelesses - the real deal, although the bottle had been opened for a week, so who knows on which day it became drinkable; I don't know for sure that this was not entirely destemmed, but I suspect it wasn't which does the trick with all that 05 fruit

Nice. One of the few 05 Burgundies that I have. Although I hadn't planned to open bottles for the foreseeable future.

Tonight, 2002 Huet petillant, second release, perfectly good: plenty of acid, adequate fizz, signs of age but not fatigue. Brun l'Ancien 2012, at its best on the third night. As with many southern Rhones, must drink notably cool; delicious pepper. Also Sant Ambrogio Lodali nebbiolo d'Alba, very good, with clear definition and attractively rubby tannins and just enough fruit.

Another lovely bottle of 2011 Griffe du Marquis. Just what I wanted to drink, and fine at the table with mushroom gnocchi in parsley sauce.

Does anyone know if the 2012 is coming soon?

Last night, 2002 Bertheau Bonnes Mares and 2002 Drouhin Vosne Petit Monts - the former from my cellar and acquired upon release, the latter from a friend's cellar, acquired more recently via auction.

Both wines in very good shape - the Drouhin had been decanted and immediately returned to bottle several hours earlier, the Bertheau decanted at the restaurant. At first, the Bertheau was much more enjoyable with its wide-open nose of fruit and earth. On the palate it was just this side of too lush. But as time went on, the Drouhin opened up and revealed arguably its better structure. Both wines incredibly enjoyable and we hung out at the restaurant (Ripple) for almost 5 hours letting the wines develop in our glasses - and of course sharing them with the staff. Both wines approachable now but could certain hold and perhaps benefit (well, definitely the Drouhin) with more age.

Last night, a rare date night spent wandering through downtown establishments. 2011 Drouhin Cote de Beaune-Villages was light, lifted and sappy. 2011 Clos la Coutale Cahors was young and gritty but had a good acidic spine and identifiable Malbec character. 2012 Renwood Zin was as ghastly as you'd guess and proved to be worse with my cassoulet than the Adelsheim Pinot Gris that Jean got (minerally and zippy).

I estimate I drank or tasted about 450 wines a week ago in Germany and France, but I can't remember any of them. I think one was really good. It was a white.

Thanks, JP.

I heard about this. Awesome.
I commend you on upholding the finest Wd tradition of impenetrable humor.

Good work, ML.

And awesome indeed.

The '91 and '95 montebellos were better than the Al Limit.
Better terroir.

they know their limitations

Scotch ale - had two excellent ones in the past week - Elevation 66's Cabertosser ale and Sierra Nevada's both from tap and the cask-conditioned version. Roasted malty and complex with minimal hoppiness, which is a nice break from the hoppier-than-thou trend of the past few years in craft brews. Really delicious, if a little higher in alcohol than I would like my beer to be.

97 cantemerle and 07 clos jaugeron was a fun mix.

93 vergers from niellon was fun without mixing.

mercuria 10 zani stole teh zings.
