What did you drink tonight?

2003 Métras l'Ultime last night was one of the more memorable wines I've ever drunk. Dusty and talc-y at first, with an immediately explosive taste and smell of musky roses. The way the muskiness evolved into a hint of the floral funk you get with properly ripe tropical fruit was the only indication, to my mind, of the vintage's "canicule". The label read 13.5% but there was no heat to the wine. Very alive-tasting, so much flavor for such weightlessness.

Last night was a lovely dinner of fresh pumpkin ravioli and sauteed spinach with orange muscat vinegar and a rocking bottle of 2012 Descombes Morgon VV. This has always delivered the elegant crystal silky crunch. And keeps proving bottle after bottle how such a combination is possible!

And much more expressive than a recent bottle of 2013 Descombes Morgon which has been going in and out of pleasure over the past few months. The 2013 Descombes Regnié on the other hand seems to be loosening up and showing its juicy high-toned loveliness in a very accessible way.

Had this about a week ago (I think I'm the only person who drank it in preference to all the Bordeaux and Burgundy on the table) and must concur. Fantastic wine!

Disgorged April 2012. Not vintage of course, but 100% from grapes of that harvest. This is Bouchard's only Chardonnay. Usually my least favorite. This, however, is a beautiful wine. At cellar temperature it is round and generous without being at all flabby. Lots of white flowers and lemon zest on the nose. Crisp and long in the mouth. Like the best Sekt. But lighter on its feet. He seems to have hit home runs on all bottlings in '08.

But a bottle of Nikolaihof muskateller 2008 yesterday was very nice. Time has softened the acid edges, but it still has zip. And all that yellow Muscat funk and smoothness. At 12% abv, so very lunchable.

Nice. I wouldn't have expected muskateller to have an acid edge, but from St. Nik everything is possible.

2012 Chateau d'Epire, Savennieres Cuvee Speciale - Flowers, honey, stones and all things Savennieres, very open and easy going wine for this house. Not a softy by any means but much less austere than the wines I remember from the '90s-'00s. Really nice to drink now. Also they have redesigned their label. It's an elegant, all typography solution but of course I prefer the old look.

Thanks for this. Haven't bought a bottle of Epire in years. I was never blown away. But you've inspired me to revisit.

You should revisit Rahsaan. The wine is quite good.

Pavese Ermes, Valle D'Aoste, Blanc de Morgex et de la Salle tonight was just brilliant with shrimp in a Thai black pepper sauce.

On successive nights, 1995 Daniel Rion NSG VV, 1990 Olga Raffault Chinon Picasses, and 1995 Bouchard VR Reignots (Comte Liger Belair), and the tertiary living is good. And now, time for some infanticides.

The last sips tonight, if I really listen hard, have the faintest hint of cocoa powder. I love Savennieres.

That's some descriptor. Nice.

Nothing too exotic taste or descriptor-wise for me this weekend.

2012 Morgons.

Chamonard needed lots of air to show its lovely depth. Descombes VV was the reliable rollicking pleasure. And my first bottle of Foillard CdP was delicious and silky but interestingly bright. Curious to taste more.

2003 Overnoy-Houillon Savagnin Ouillé 500ml last night was pretty, and indeed oxidative, despite being oiled to the hilt. 2002 Bouchard Montrachet predictably lovely fruit smothered by moneygrabbing wood. 1970 LdH Tondonia was the usual complete meal marvel, ditto for a 1971 Immich-Batterieberg Beerenauslese, just totally flying gazooks Wonder Bar.

2013 Clos Roche Blanche, Sauvignon No. 2 - A perfect rendition of this wine. With a couple days air cherry fruit and celery seed flavors come into play. Just wow.
