What did you drink tonight?

That is ok. I am not buying any more young burgundy.

It is remarkable what sacrifices Maureen will make, in order to buy more Riesling!

Here you go, Jay. Wines from Saturday night minus the '24 J. Gremy Chateau Chevrier- Vouvray Clos Descartes.

If there is what could be described as an opulent style of Muscadet, I'd guess this would surely be an example. It's so pretty, and it still makes me want an oyster, or a dozen. The extra time on lees? The terroir? I like this a lot, and don't want to stop drinking it.

Steve,
Have you had other extra-leesy Muscadets, such as Pepiere's Clisson? If so, how does this one compare?

Mark Lipton

Only in a younger state (not that 4 years isn't pretty young), the Clisson being, perhaps more taut. The comparison that emerges, in my imagination, is the difference between, with the CdGL, being swept out to sea on a big wave, and with the Clisson, being struck by lightning. Either way, I suppose, nothing's ever quite the same again.

And yet I'm still moving!

But I do have this odd hunger for brains. Is that a bad sign?

Does Aubert Chardonnay taste any less grotesque to you now?

No notes for us?

Sounds like a memorable occasion.

I stopped taking notes very, very early, but this was for our monthly blind wine tasting group. Here are my recollections:

1994 Jadot Beaujolais Village - surprisingly pleasant faded older wine. Falling apart but I finished the glass.

2002 Nicolas Joly Clos de la Coulée de Serrant (Chenin Blanc). This was so sulphury I couldn't get anything else.
2009 Scholium Project The Prince In His Caves Farina (Sauvignon Blanc). I'll take credit for being one of only 3 people who identified this as SB. Interesting, a bit weird, enjoyable on its own terms but not something I'd go out of my way for.

1994 Macon Lugny les Charmes. This was a remarkably pleasant surprise. Soft, complex and melony. Liked this a lot. In fact, one of my 3 favorites.
2006 Aubert Lauren - Dumped quickly.
2007 Drouhin-Vaudin Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos. Good, many people identified it as Chablis.

1990 Gruaud Larose - Best of the flight and one of the best of the night. Improved considerably in the glass (as they all did).
1994 Gruaud Larose - Very good
1996 Gruaud Larose - Very good

1987 Ridge Monte Bello - slightly corked. Aargh. Early on just on the nose and the palate showed some beauty. After 5 minutes or so in the glass it was obviously TCA.
1994 Ridge Monte Bello Really nice. Solid, big, Drapery but balanced. Starting to show some complexity. Very good indeed. Another favorite.
1997 Ridge Monte Bello (85% Cab., 11% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot). Not as balanced as the 1994, fruit and oak were both dialed up. Not bad, but not a vintage I'd seek out.

2007 Scarecrow. Barely drinkable
2007 Colgin IX Undrinkable
2007 Outpost True Vineyard. Monstrously undrinkable. Unfortunately Leo wasn't fast enough to get a picture of my face when I tasted this.

2011 Donnachiara Ostinato (100% Greco Bianco) - eh
2003 Franz Karl Schmitt Niersteiner Oldberg Beerenauslese. - rich, unctuous. Good in that style but I couldn't manage more than a sip or two of it.

Abe's wines don't seem like good candidates for blind tasting to me. The context seems pretty important, and they aren't representative examples of anything.
