What did you drink tonight?

2000 Puffeney Pinot Noir last night at Racines was dee-lish. Beautiful light red color (just a hair or two darker than Rose), mature aromas of rose petals, mushrooms and soil. On the palate, there's good acidity, which gives the wine a nice brightness, and some pretty tart-cherry fruit. I wouldn't hold this much longer, but it's a lovely drink right now.

Forlorn Hope Sierra Foothills Dewitt "Mil Amores" Red Blend 2012: what a great name for a small winery. And what a remarkable wine - intense and complex aroma with plum pudding, cardamom, orange peel, current fruit; similar but more restrained on palate, with medium body, some density, decent acidity, dry lively tannins and good length. Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Tinto Roriz (aka Tempranillo). $22.50

Matthew Rorick (proprietor) makes very nice Semillon and Verdelho as well.

An amazing wine for the price. So expressive.

arana 05, ardanza 04, real 05 other stuffs.

old skool in cadiz. in so many ways.

what's happening in teh beer thread?

fb.

2011s from Hobo, Sceales grenache and Branham zinfandel. Both excellent. Really and truly.

The grenache was leaner than I remember. This is from ~100 year old dry farmed vines. A nice grenache woodsyness was interwoven with some spice.

The zinfandel showed real herbal complexity and tautness. According to Kenny, this zinfandel finishes with riesling level TA.

2006 Lafouge Auxey Durresses Chapelle: needs 1-2 hours decanter time to relax, then very good, sporting tart cherry and that silky pinot combination of lemony acidity with fine-grained tannins.

2011 Occhipinti Frapatto: Rough and tough for the first two days, lava-like in its raspy unloveability. On the third day, signs of relaxing a bit. Would be interesting to follow over some years.

Chateau Grand Travers Gamay Noir: at $15, actually pretty good. Tannins mask the flavor, but are well-balanced with fresh acidity; nothing unduly grapey; 12.8% abv. Who knew. Much the best MI red I've had; would buy this again.

Debize Beaujolai-villages L'homme a la veste: Likewise, very good: 11.5%, on the tart, medium-light weight, quaffable, thirst-quenching Beaujolais side. We went through the bottle in no time.

2012 pepiere Muscadet (no more words of praise seem needed); '03 Selbach kabinett Z. schlossberg. actually, very delicious. Maybe not so kabinett, but nonetheless, light on its feet. And oh so delicious.

And then with dinner, 2004 "Y". This is killer stuff. Smokey and pissy nose,; yet, all yellow fruit on the tongue, with extra acidity all along down the throat. Seems lighter than the 13.5% abv disclosed on the label.

These two wines add up nicely to mine: 2007 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett, J.J. Prum. A future vintage (which I interpret as an embedded "hold" recommendation from Kirk) is only slightly more unorthodox than the AP number on '07 Prum: 34 12. Katarina did talk about discovering entire pallets of who knows what, in their cellars. I guess she wasn't kidding.

2012 Frantz Saumon Montlouis Mineral+ -- rather severe and lean, delicious really but not quite as appealing as in previous vintages.

Have to backpedal on the Michigan Gamay, which doesn't stand up to prolonged scrutiny.

Ian, It's worth noting that some American wine being labelled as gamay noir is actually an upright growing clone of pinot noir which can legally be called gamay noir. The upright vine actually tastes nothing like gamay and, not surprisingly, everything like pinot.

Yes, once you're in the market as something, it's hard to switch.
So, close out the one and announce a new bottling of the other. The Marketing department is all about re-branding, no?

Edited to correct to 2012.

What a great wine!

Had an unexpectedly delicious New World pinot noir this evening at an unusual place. Good work, home team. 2012 Ceritas Anderson Valley Hacienda Secoya Pinot Noir.

Lovely biz. A kind of seamless thing, nothing that leapt out and was a red flag. A red ribbon.
