any Disorderlies in Berlin should definitely consider visiting pronto before the list gets picked over any further.

i won't pretend i can hide my feelings about that fact that most of the areas whose existence was formerly elided by the existence of the border zone have been "revived" into the saddest simulacrum of an authentic city, or my opinion of people who revel in the frat house / shopping mall that "new berlin" has become. so i may as well acknowledge the wall of prejudice behind my question before i ask: what exactly inspired you to go to an austo-german joint in the north-east of germany, and why, given that you chose to do so, did you cherry pick this particular specimen?

Maybe he tried to be regional with a Berliner Weisse mit Schuss, in the Waldmeisterversion, first.

If you get stressed out by the "new berlin" then you must really hate the "new new york", which is my hometown, so I've been in lots of these nostalgic conversations and go back and forth on the arguments.

I mean sure, it can be sad to watch places change, but the border zone era that you were so fond of in Berlin (or the Black Harlem era in the case of my mother and extended family) was also a change from a previous time. So why is any one snapshot more 'authentic' than another?

I'm also not too convinced that just because someone was born in a location (or has spent more time in a location) that they necessarily have more right to that location. Because that logic leads to monarchy. But these things are complicated, I know. And I'm not exactly infatuated with the divine right of markets either.

I think a better question is why you feel the need to ask why someone would patronize a delicious restaurant and select a delicious wine?

because you pushed a stupid prejudice button, as i telegraphed.

and because your doesn't-sweat-much-for-a-fat-lass note reminded me that i really don't find that wine to be delicious.

Semmelweis' practice of disinfecting his hands did work against germs, even though he didn't know why. Nightingale mostly cleaned windows and floors.

Without returning to the text, I have a notion that she also instituted a laundry, which had to have helped with typhus.

You may be more discerning than me on these issues. I don't have much recent experience with 03 Austrian wines and thought it would be interesting, and it was enough to please me for the meal. Although if I return I won't order that wine again.

And I probably don't have the same history that you do with Berlin but I'm also not the biggest fan of frat boy shopping mall consumerism in any city. But I largely avoid those areas of the city, just due to my natural rhythms and daily needs. Except last night when I needed someplace to meet a friend.

Aaron was asking for recommendations for Athens on his blog, and I had the whole REM tour for him before I realized he meant Greece.

Roger Neveu, Sancerre 2005, Clos des Bouffants

thought these were all long gone by now. cellar rummage treasure

can't recall what I paid (~$20?) but sure do wish I had more now

2005 Volnay Drouhin

I have discovered the secret key to Burgundy: drink Drouhin

2013 Clos Roche Blanche Pif
Much tarter but less tannicly harsh tha the 2012. It puzzles me a bit but with some Kayser baguette and Landaff it was tamed into a savage tiger of a wine, lashing its tail but willing to be admired.

2005 Clos rougeard Clos
With dinner at Castagna with Jeff and hoke. Enjoyable wine though not for the Brett averse. I don't think castagna's predilection for storing their wines at room temperature served this bottle well.

How was the rest of the experience?

Define room temperature.

I'd say about 75 or so.

Some very good dishes, some less inspired (the beef was very, very tough). All the food was very pretty and one of the amuses bouches was outstanding. Overall a very good meal but I don't feel any urge to hurry back unless I can get a plate of those buckwheat chips with avocado.
