My only bottle of 2008 Les Gras Moutons rocked (amphibolitically, according to Jeff Connell) with a nice selection of ME and NY oysters from Chelsea Market.

Yes, that was a nice one. Outclassed a *slightly* premoxed 2002 Huet Le Mont Demi Sec and a surprisingly oaky 1990 CVNE Imperiale GR.

the CVNE Imperial was quite nice by 11pm. Surprised you left it behind!

this showing from le Mont confirmed that the bottle I opened two weeks ago was perfect indeed

I've been through a couple good bottles of 2009 Henri Prudhon St. Aubin Rouge Sur le Sentier du Clou. These have been my first bottles ever from Prudhon and they have been so lovely for the $35 price. A fair-enough dose of sweet juicy fruit but with elegance poise and fine structure. Am I crazy for guessing that this benefited from the ripe vintage and is not always so perfectly composed?

I've also been enjoying the 2012 Knebel Röttgen Kabinett, again, so well composed and balanced, sweet tangy fruit and refreshing minerality. Liked it a lot more as it warmed and the flavors emerged, but with no corresponding loss in freshness (admittedly I have not been sitting outside in boiling summer heat while drinking these, at which point the freshness may become compromised).

I also opened my first bottle of 2010 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco and was wondering how approachable ‘approachable’ would be. Of course it started off tart and tannic but after several hours it turned to palate pleasure and I will drink some more soon. I'm not one of those Produttori veterans who compares the minutiae of every release, so I'll leave that to others. But from my perspective this was very solid wine and very good value, worth my exploration.

i drank a bunch of 07 san valentino's. they were all terrific. i only managed to keep my mitts off one. which i hope let age for a few more years.

eta: when i bought these they were somewhere in the mid to upper $20's which was a steal.

There were no salient varietal characteritics to dislike, just a general sense of riper, hotter, ordinariness. I'll have to open another one.

I've gone through 6 of the '07 Bea San Valentinos, with some definite bottle variation. I found the VA overwhelming on the first few; the others have been very good - the last about a year and a half ago. Have 2 more left to experiment with...

My one bottle of '07 San Valentino was quite lovely. Perhaps you're not fond of Sagrantino, O.?

The San Valentino is a Montefalco Rosso, isn't it? It's predominantly Sangiovese, with lesser amounts of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Sagrantino. I've had 4-5 bottles of the '05 in the last year or two, and all of them have been excellent.

Yes, I was assuming that the Sangiovese and Montepulciano wouldn't be an issue, but as he says it was probably just the VA and heat that he was reacting to.

As I understand it, the usual cuvee from Bea is Vigna San Valentino, a Montefalco Rosso.

In 2006, and only in 2006, the boys down at the DOC tasting room wouldn't give it the certification. Bea would have to sell the wine as Umbria Rosso, a big hit in price. So, he called it IGT, named it San Valentino -- note, no "Vigna" -- and we all benefitted. The boys down at the DOC tasting room were out of their heads that day.

Anyway, so which wine is it you had?
