Save the "what did you drink tonight" thread.

In 2006, and only in 2006, the boys down at the DOC tasting room wouldn't give it the certification. Bea would have to sell the wine as Umbria Rosso, a big hit in price. So, he called it IGT, named it San Valentino -- note, no "Vigna" -- and we all benefitted. The boys down at the DOC tasting room were out of their heads that day.

Anyway, so which wine is it you had?

You're right; thanks for the clarification. The wine I posted on was the 2006- which came with the story you give, not the 2007 as originally stated. Mea culpa.

My one bottle of '07 San Valentino was quite lovely. Perhaps you're not fond of Sagrantino, O.?

The San Valentino is a Montefalco Rosso, isn't it? It's predominantly Sangiovese, with lesser amounts of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Sagrantino. I've had 4-5 bottles of the '05 in the last year or two, and all of them have been excellent.
You mean the PLCB bottles are sound? I've been hesitant to buy one.

Mine was this one (btw, a pristine example, no sign of veterans administration).

A clue: says right there on the label that it's made with "second choice" grapes. Maybe I was just miffed at drinking second choice grapes. Admiration for their disclosure ethics, originating as it does in a non-sensual segment of the cerebrum, was incapable of overwhelming the unthinking tyranny of the papillae.

2012 JJC Urziger Wurzgarten Spatlese-Vibrant and complex. Maybe a little jumpy at the moment still but I'm sure it will be calmer tonight.

I don't venture into Spanish wine very often, but the other night I found myself in a tapas restaurant with an excellent Spanish list, and settled on the 2003 LdH Bosconia as a compromise for divergent palates at the table. It was very refreshing for the year and went very well with the food.

Hold 2007 Clos des Briords. It's fantastic but could use more bounce and transparency to be certainly gained in time, as it's relatively dense and textured for this terroir. I think I might have said Clisson blind.

2013 Lodi Rosé of Sangiovese, Lange Twins - medium body with a bit of grip, good acid, freshness and fruit, some Chianti-esque bitter cherry and pits, finishes dry with a nice hint of tannin. I've yet to taste an interesting red from Sangiovese in California, but I've had a number of tasty rosés. Good stuff for $9!

2007 Napa York Creek Dynamite Hill Petite Sirah, Ridge - young somewhat restrained blackberry fruit with touches of pepper, eucalyptus, bay; medium-full body, good acid, dense, medium ripeness, fairly long, significant but not harsh tannins, actually fairly open for this wine at this age.

1998 Madiran, Ch. de Perron - still fairly dark, no browning; mild mature nose with some clay-earth, barn hay and cigar wrapper tones, mild oak; mellow fruit, medium full body with density, significant but mellow tannins frame the dry earthy finish, somewhat rustic and somewhat St Estephe-like.

1971 Schloss Reinhartshausen Erbacher Hohenrain Riesling Spatlese is a mouthful to say, but was an incredibly beautiful bottle of wine last night.

insane showing from '12 L'Arpent Rouge CRB

bottle served colder than usual, about 51F, and just bursting with fruit

i am getting way too emotional about this wine here

2011 Clos Roche Blanche Pif

Purity and minerality, but a certain harshness. Reminds me a bit of the 1998 Cot. I'll put the other ones away in the hope that they will evolve in a similar fashion.

They did!

Drinking beautifully now.
