Platinum tout/award

A wine was touted recently by a fellow wine enthusiast. Checking the Internet, it turns out that it won a big award...

[PARAPHRASED FROM MULTIPLE SOURCES]
The California State Fair gave out the top wine awards from the California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition.

This year's competition consisted of 2,829 wine entries received from 746 winery brands.

Sterling Vineyards 2010 Platinum Cabernet Sauvignon was named Best of Show Red, Best of Napa Red, and awarded double gold medals. The wine also tied in the category of Best Cabernet Sauvignon.
[END PARAPHRASE]

Long ago, I liked the Sterling wines so I'm glad to have picked up some of this acclaimed wine in the hopes that it reflects a resurgence in Sterling quality level(s).

I haven't tasted it so it would be interesting if anyone here can comment on it.

Those guys make some pretty good stuff.

their winery brands are not my own favourites, but i'm glad that they are out there producing beverages with brands at every price point.

let a hundred brands bloom!

is "platinum cabernet sauvignon" the name of a clone? and how does it compare to le piat d'or for cellarwothiness?

Joe, I had forgotten that Sterling, BV, Chalone, Hewitt, etal had sold out to this conglomerate.

Richard, I wonder if many people will admit to drinking Le Piat d'Or.

in the days when the fatsink was a mere spittoon, piat bottled some of the finer wines in beaujolais. some of them even aged well.

Interesting...and a bit surprising that this wine is receiving accolades from most everywhere and no observable negative reports.

It's interesting...and a bit surprising (to me, at least) because I checked the bottle and it indicates 14.9% alcohol level.

The alcohol must be really well buffered for this bottling to gain such widespread awards/approval. (I don't plan to open any of mine on the near term so hopefully the alcohol will be even more in abeyance down the road.)

the Diageo rep.

Personally, my confidence level in the "accolades" was less for the State Fair results and more for the individuals who extolled the bottling.

I'm still surprised that a wine with such high alcohol percentage seems to be enjoying such acclaim.

Not sure which individuals you are referring to, but there's a lot of shitty palates out there.

you are a man i admire. ignore the communists and go large on teh sterling vineyards 2010 platinum cabernet sauvignon.

and remember to splurge on the etched commemorative rosewood cases. the insider individuals who need to protect their privacy yet extoll the bottling tell me that they add resale value.
