Three wines in the cellar

Jay Miller

Jay Miller
Jeff G., John M. and I met in the cellar this afternoon for 3/4 beautiful wines.

1970 Monte Real Rioja
1989 Lynch Bages
2004 Produtorri Barbaresco
Special Yixin Bordaresco blend

The Monte Real was a gorgeous mature Rioja, at peak. Kept developing and changing over the course of the day.

The Lynch started out a bit soft but put on layers of leathery goodness. Beautiful wine, it's only fault might have been a slight lack of acidity.

The Barbaresco was also a beauty, with wonderful red fruit emerging with time in the decanter.

While discussing the Lynch we decided to try pouring a little Barbaresco into it to supply the missing acidity. Perfection!

All the wines started out sleepy: the rioja was pickle-y, the barbaresco tannic, and the pauillac hollow. We carafed them all (the rioja went back in its bottle because we had only two decanters). After a half-hour they stirred; after an hour and a half they sang.

A few of the Lynch left in the cellar.
It has been a pleasure to follow it since release.
Some store owner that had no idea sold me cases of it for $29/bottle. Bless his heart.
Best, Jim

That's what we sold the 89 and 90 for back in the day at Wells.

Thanks, sugah.

that is what the '89 as a future, cost at Astor and Pearsons too. i wasn't clever enough to buy multiple cases, though. 1 seemed like enough at the time. the '90 was just a bit more.

It's great to hear these reports on the Lynch, as we've been sitting on ours until now (I think Jean paid more than $29 for them at Sam's, though)
