Wine List. Holy Canoli

World of Fine Wine gave some wine list awards this week. Some went to deserving friends (Comrades PCapp and Pascaline, for instance), others to places I've never heard of, and still others to places I've long wanted to visit.

Their top award went to this list, which is pretty damned amazing. It's remarkable to me not just for jaw-dropping breadth and depth, but for very fair pricing for a place carrying so much inventory.

Let me guess, you're in it for the Armand de Brignac, right?

Amazing selection. I can even find Bordeaux that I'd buy off the list and that's unheard of.

But seriously, I am in awe of, for example, the Austrian sections of the list. And the 1919 Huet (this was the oldest vintage acquired when Huet bought the estate in 1928, no?).

There were older vintages, but this is the oldest I've seen in commerce, and the oldest I've had.

I avoided going while in Vienna recently, in the hopes of holding on to the large sum of money I surely would have been tempted to spend there. Definite pangs of regret, though.

The menu, at the hotel restaurant. If all you want to do is drink, there are six cocktail-party-ish venues adjacent to the cellars.

That is a remarkable list, in all regions.
Austrian heaven for sure, and fine pickings in Germany and classic French/Italian regions. But some weird holes: minimal Chablis and Pfalz listings, and a vestigial rose' section. Peculiar choices of Oregon wine, although that might be just a matter of what's available there.

Egg Yolk with Calf's head, artichoke, ceps, daisy
Some hilariously gruesome presentation images spring to mind here.

the history of the society is fascinating. Also caught my eye that '07 Schartzhofberg aus. cost more than '00 Montrose or '01 Yquem. (how much in 2014 USD is 1914 68 shillings (3 pounds 8 shillings)?)

and what about the Ducru white sparkling wine??
