Seattle

Best meal we had was at Mamnoon, right across the street from Sitka (by the bye, the Market which houses Sitka is lovely). Syrian. Brilliant food and a pretty good list, lots of Musar, but also some other nice choices.

And on a NWR note, every visitor to Seattle should visit The Elliot Bay Book Company. One of the great independent book stores of the world.

Hey, I'm in Seattle for the 2nd half of this week and also for the weekend. My first time in the city since 2011 or 2012 so I will need some guidance.

Definitely planning to visit Shawn's place. Spinasse and Walrus & Carpenter sound good. Not sure I will be able to pack a blazer to get into Canlis.

Are there any new recs or findings or other general updates since 2014? Primarily in terms of lunch and dinner recs but open to anything really. Also one specific question is where to find excellent salmon sashimi.

Also interested in jeebing, so see the jeebus board for details.

Looking at the wine selection and markup at some of these places I am thinking I will need some wine shop recs as well.

Also in the Vif thread, BJ said...
Did you all know the Walrus and the Carpenter has a food truck? Did you know that every other Friday it sits in the Vif parking lot? OMG people!!!
Still true?

Not yet mentioned...
Mamnoon seems to fly a bit under the radar but puts out some really top Lebanese/Syrian fare.
London Plane does a very nice lunch/brunch

Thanks guys for the suggestions. Checking them out now.

A couple of observations so far, regarding most restaurants I've looked at and their beverage programs. First, almost every program seems to be cocktails first, wine second. Second, the wine markups are really surprising on many lists.

Yes I am just returning from Spain which is about as good as it gets for both wine pricing in restaurants and value in wine, in general. But I live in San Francisco which is arguably the most expensive market in the US currently, so I wasn't expecting to find same to worse pricing in Seattle. It's also a reminder of how much of a gem Portland is at the moment.

Wow, the Canlis list is monumental.
I'm digging the Bar Ferdinand food menus, and London Plane looks like a great midday option.

Mamnoon also looks good. Is this primarily a BYO place or do they have interesting/disorderly options?

If you're there for a Friday lunch, I really like the Tsukushinbo ramen, and the wait usually isn't too bad. Do try and get there in time for the first seating, though.

Thanks Lee. It looks like they're no longer open for lunch on weekdays, but Saturday or Sunday would be an option.

Thanks Lee - the information out on the interwebs regarding their hours is definitely inconsistent. I'll call to confirm.

We ate at Mamnoon a few years ago and my recollection of the list was the highlights were a fairly good number of back vintages of Chateau Musar. I don’t think the rest of the offerings were extensive or that interesting.
Food was very good and the owner seemed nice so corkage may be an option.

Seattle’s restaurant wine scene seems way behind Portland in my limited experience.

If you feel like eating oysters, there is a branch of Taylor shellfish on Capitol Hill that has great seafood. Pretty sure their wine list is no more than a few by the glass offerings of commercial stuff but the seafood is very fresh.

Canlis is great, and I've never worn a blazer there (most recently in spring 2017). The rest like W&C are fun. The Fremont area was buzzing when I was there last year.

Spinasse was wonderful in a high-caloric vein, with the most delicious tajarin I've had stateside. I also loved the insalata di cicoria (I'm a sucker for well-executed bitter greens) and the uovo con fonduta.

We were initially ecstatic to find a well-priced 2014 Burlotto Monvigliero on the wine list, but sadly it was mostly closed for business. Some vague red fruits came out with air but none of the trademark sweet amarena cherry / dark strawberry fruit, savory black olive or dried floral goodness.

I suppose it serves us right for gambling on such a young wine, but other vintages have been approachable young, and I still have memories of how much pixie dust joy the 2011 offered on release.

to be continued
