NY Remembers SFJoe

Chris Coad

Many thanks to all the folks at Racine's, and to David Lillie and everyone else who made this night happen. I think we needed it.

Lovely seeing everyone. All the stars of the NYC wine demimonde.

Indeed. It was a wonderful evening with so many old and familiar faces. Especially nice to see Callahan in attendance. Seemed like old times. If only the two Joe Ds were there in body, not just spirit.

Glad to read about this, in the circumstances. I'd have tried to come, if I'd known about the event, but imagine the NY community who knew Joe intimately probably needed a chance to join together among themselves. Hope y'all will post some photos, if you have them.

Yes, many, many thanks.

It was a good evening. We laughed, we cried, we told stories about Joe (and speaking with Andrew I finally figured out when I first met him).

It's important to note that this was a memorial organized by Joe's family and his business partners, rather than a remember-Joe jeebus which we should seriously consider putting together sooner than later. The disorderly community was a huge part of Joe's life and those of us included in this celebration were most honoured. No question there could have easily been twice as many of us, or even more, among those who have considered sharing a bottle with Joe one of the highlights of their disorderly career. It was only due to a private nature of this event, with significant space constraints, that we ended up sending a smaller, politburo-vetted group of delegates.

We have more wine. We will open it, smell it, drink it, and argue about how many points Joe would have given it.

We will arrive in NY evening of October 21st leaving the morning of the 28th. We had the good fortune of knowing SF Joe since he actually lived in San Francisco many years ago. If there is to be a "jeebus" we would greatly appreciate if it could take place in the time slot I have mentioned.

Thanks should also go to Sasha for handling the communication between the geeks, family and co-workers and passing the hat for the staff at Racines, who also deserve our gratitude.

And thanks to those who spoke so passionately of Joe, it really helped.

Always thought Callahan was much older.

The goat head added a decade, at least.

That explains it. Also, from the name, I expected someone more thickset, or at least larger than life. That looks more like a Ben Miller or a Mike Foster.

That's me, offscreen, right behind Jayson.

Oswaldo, if it's any comfort, "I thought he was older" is something people have been saying about Callahan since the Jurassic Era. He has an enduring boyishness.

Boy chic.

Here's another one of Callahan last night, with Joe's sister, Ann and Eric Asimov.

Fucking A, Kay. It helped a lot. It was great to see almost everyone who was there the first time I met SFJoe, notable absent, Joe Dressner.

Sorry I bailed, needed to go drink Bourbon.

So many feelings to unpack, New York mourns the loss of a giant.
