What did we drink last night...

A very limited subset of notes:

1990 Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Kabinett
Ridiculous nose, insanely long and complex. Perhaps the most savory riesling I remember having and probably my wotn. With air (this was one of the few wines I put aside to follow over the course of the night) htere are undertones of leather and moss. I don't age my Kabinetts long enough.

1994 Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Kabinett
Electric nose but I found it still young on the palate.

1985 Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Spatlese
still showing sulphur on the nose but the palate is beautiful and intricately complex. Rewards attention

1993 JJ Prum Graacher Himmelreich Auslese
really needed air, once it got some it was honeyed, deep, but still young.

1990 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Auslese
There were 2 bottles. One was only so so the other was magical.

1989 von Schubert Maximin Grunhauser Abstberg Auselse
wow nose! stunning wine. Craig redeemed himself for bringing Krug and a white Bordeaux to the cellar the previous week.

1971 Egon Muller Braune Kupp Auslese.
Magic
1975 Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Auslese
Another unbelievable wine.
1964 Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Auslese
a little musty on the nose at first, fascinating wine. loved it the best of the 64, 66 and 69

As amazing as it was to have the chance to taste these wines (and the many others that flew by) I won't be going back to Rieslingfeier. There were so many wines that it was painful to dump as the bottles wouldn't stop coming. And the crowds and the noise gave me a headache even before the first wine was poured.

To my surprise my favorites were two babies: 2013 von Winning Pechstein and Kirchenstueck. They were so fine and fresh yet powerful and while in many ways having similar qualities also reflected the very different soils they come from. I don't remember trying any GG just months after release that I wanted to take the bottle and just gulp it down. They also came at the right time as a little later I lost completely track of what I was drinking. Not sure how you guys seem to be able to keep it all together.

I tasted those two von Winning wines at the Riesling Reborn seminar and was equally impressed. I will be buying them.

I just looked at the US prices. If you buy a case each you can actually fly into Frankfurt, visit the winery and have a nice meal and still save a few $$.

Better buy your wine before your ticket. If my memory is correct, von Winning's holding in Kirchenstück is extremely small, and add to that the small production for the vintage. My guess is that they no longer have a 12 bottles left for sale, or if they do, they wouldn't sell them all to a single customer.

You are right. Winery is sold out. And so are almost all German stores. But I did find both wines after all.
