Huet 1996 Vouvray Sec "Le Mont" - beautiful, creamy and rich, just the barest hint of apple juice reminds how difficult it has been to find these wines in pristine shape

Prager 2001 Achleiten Gruner Veltliner - very slightly vegetal, lots of saffron, crisp, no pox at all, velvety texture, an SFJoe bottle

Bereche NV Champagne "Rive Gauche" - it's the '10 bottling because they changed to the script labels; all pinot meunier, beautiful, well-mannered fizz, crisp, that very slight waxy/funky smell that indicates p.m. to me

some 1998 Australian horror - not really a horror but it's very tired from carrying around all that oak

Vieux Chateau Certan 1976 Pomerol - dead

Ch. Figeac 1975 Saint-Emilion - vigorous, lean, sinewy, chewy

Ch. Trotanoy 1966 Pomerol - OMG, it has everything: earth, orange peel, some faraway red berries, sweet tobacco, wow

Trimbach 1995 Riesling "Clos St Hune" - poxxed

Linden 2012 Chardonnay "Hardscrabble" - from Virginia, nice bottle of chardonnay, but slightly too oaky so is wearying to drink, I found one reviewer online who says it's better at age 10

Pinon 1994 Vouvray - gorgeous bottle of wine, rich, mellow, very Chenin

L. Boillot 2000 Volnay 1er "Les Caillerets" - a little stinky, sturdy, nice enough but doesn't scream Caillerets

Foillard 2007 Morgon "Cuvee 3.14" - big and ripe, even some earth under all that fruit, great wine

VCC easily as good as Figeac or Trotanoy, in its own way of course.

By rights, I should remove that bottle from my report because I didn't get to taste it; you just told me it had been opened earlier.

Oh, and you forgot that horrible taste of 2002 Mayacamas Cabernet.

Lactic, feh!

Which improved considerably by the time it got to its destination and was approved of by a notable Italian wine maker.

We opened a Linden Harscrabble Chardonnay 05 over the weekend. It was fresh and smooth, but without any engaging complexity, depth, or even acid zing. I tried hard to like a glass and then opened an '04 Trimbach CFE in frustration, which was miles better. The Linden may have opened more on the second day, but I didn't have the heart to try it again.

I still owe Cliff my last bottle of this Linden; one day I'll get up there and hand it off.
