2005 Roilette Tardive

VLM

VLM
Hallelujah! Opened about 30 minutes before dinner. Beautiful dark ruby robe. The nose starts with some deep plum and cherry fruit overlaying some wet rocks and a real sense of density. On the palate it has finally decided to be friendly. Not gregarious, sort of grudgingly friendly. There is still plenty of structure and the wine has started to feel a bit pinote and Burgundian, but it is starting to enter its drinking window. This wine is so distinctive, it couldn't be anything other than Roilette. It's been a while coming and I must admit that I almost lost faith. I'm glad I didn't.

Nice when you catch them at that perfect moment.

Caught '98 Donnhoff Kirschheck in a spectacularly perfect moment last night in the cellar - finally not too sweet for its constitution, and a little earthy, creamy and grounded. Not what VLM wants to hear, of course.

Opening things after I left? Humph!

they were trying to set a cellar closing time record, and were running out of wine.

I think I don't like the creamy part.

I'm not sure it is quite perfect yet, but close. Really close. Why don't y'all come down for a visit and we'll drink a magnum. Better yet, start distributing here and come for a Marvin.

It was already wonderful on January 3, 2014.

Geeze, that sounds like fun. I might still have a bottle of '95 laying around, you know, for educational purposes.

Barely. This was in a place.

Give me a head's up if this comes to fruition. It's not that far a drive from Atlanta to Raleigh and I can contribute some combination of 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2002 Coudert Tardive as an incentive to put up with me.

I'd never had any at 10+ years before, but the 04 Tardive was really just in a gloriously perfect place yesterday. Brown bagged in the parking lot at Vif and sipped from plastic cups. Thanks Brad and Mme L!

I thought creamy was the Yixin ideal for aged MSR Riesling.

It is. The good '34s are at that stage now, as are the '47s and '49s. And the '76s seem to have been that way forever. I found a stray bottle of PG from Bollig-Lehnert's predecessor the other day, still drinking nicely.
