Wine and Politics

I just had an offer hit my Inbox for some Montevertine wines. In light of last year's racist posts by Martino Manetti, I haven't bought any Montevertine (though I haven't rid myself of the remaining Montevertine wines in the cellar, either). I also know of some who won't buy de Montille wines because of the stated views of Hubert de Montille and there are certain other products (Barilla pasta, Georgia-Pacific paper products) that I avoid because of the views of the ownership.

So, do any of you boycott certain wines because of the views of the producers? Or does idealism end at the checkout counter?

I stopped buying Montevertine as well though I don't worry about the wines I already own. I'm also debating whether older auction purchases are okay since the money isn't going to him but to someone who bought the wines before his views became known.

re de Montille I never saw any reason to punish the son for the views of his father.

No other wines though I still won't buy gas at an Exxon Mobil station unless there's absolutely no alternative.

And it took me over a decade after Dave Thomas died before I was willing to step inside a Wendy's.

Not really, but I stopped reading wine journalist who took a particularly strong political view of wineries based on nothing but old family photos. Wasn't that much of a loss to begin with, though.

I avoid Montevertine (and accelerated the drinking of what little I had) and also avoid Pierre-Bise, who is a Le Pen supporter. I also avoid Chapoutier as much for the wines as for what he's said aboiut natural wine, etc.

I've also stopped buying Montevertine and it's tough because there aren't really any viable alternatives.

I don't have an issue with de Montille, I've met Etienne and Alix and they are both seemingly decent folks.

If you're going to stop buying wine from FN supporters, that list might get uncomfortable very quickly.

In a world full of alternative goods, there's no reason for me to provide my money (however small a portion) for creeps to recycle into bad causes.

What's the scoop on Barilla, that's a big brand?

Christian, here's the scoop. As you say, there are plenty of alternative goods, so why support a corporation whose chairman spouts anti-gay sentiments?

I subscribe to that philosophy in general. Although more on the positive end, in the sense that I like spending my money with good people in good businesses.

But of course it all comes down to what one defines as a 'bad cause'.

And sadly, these days in France am not sure that FN support is narrow enough to make that list.

But speaking of Pierre Bise, his views have been controversial above and beyond the FN, but I never saw them available in the US for many years so it didn't matter. But then recently here in the American Piedmont, I was able to buy his 2012 Rouannieres Sec (!) and 2012 Roche aux Moines. Nicely polished as befits the praise he has been getting elsewhere. Although I'm guessing both were not in their best zone, with the young fruit receding and further development not yet there.

Yep, for better or worse, FN is a bigger tent housing all sorts of varying interests other than just jingoism (although there is still lots of that).

Nathan, Etienne has come to town once or twice with his wine for small dinners. During visits here and in France, the de Montilles have proven without a doubt that they are fine people.

Hey, I don't boycott any of you guys even though you're all a bunch of commies.

You would if we, on top of being commies, were also anti-semitic, racist, and clicked Like on our own posts.
