TN: A honeymoon dinner (Sept. 21, 2015)

Rebecca and Mike, Londoners, decided to take their honeymoon in the US. They've seen the big sights and wanted to take in some countryside instead. So they landed at Kennedy, rented a car, and drove up the Hudson. They made it to Albany and then stayed at wineries and cideries and B&Bs on their way back south. They ended with a few days in NYC and we hosted them one evening.

Wines served:

Tarlant NV Champagne "Vigne d'Antan" - mostly 2000 wine, disgorged 2007; beautifully-aged chardonnay, rich without being glyceral, fizz still plentiful, a treat; I'd buy more if I could

Dujac 1996 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er "Aux Combottes" - meaty, funky, dirty, chewy, just what real Gevrey should be; I bend one prong back slightly for seeming just a tad old, but I think the groom liked it a lot

Brun NV "FRV100" - ...because we always do.

That's a lovely wine. I'm so happy LDM is bringing in Tarlant now.

While we're on the topic... Just got the email heads-up from a local procurer about another bargain: Egon Muller '14 Spatlese for $145 bottle.

A riesling grower of a generation ago would stop dead in his tracks if he could get such a price for spatlese.

Holy crap. $230 for the 2002?

K&L used to direct import Tarlant before the domaine was picked up by LDM, at much lower pricing. Back in 2006 I hosted a dinner party where each course was paired with a different Tarlant wine. The Antan used to be less than $60, IIRC, with the Cuvee Louis the most expensive wine. Even allowing for "normal" price inflation, a quadrupling is quite extreme. Thank goodness it's not common in the LDM book. For all I know, it's the domaine's doing entirely. Benoit Tarlant is a nice fellow from the couple times I've met him and I certainly don't begrudge him the extra income if the market will allow it. (Nor, of course, the LDM folks. But I'm sure they'd allow they don't need this rate of price inflation to make a living!)

Also, Fleury was a DI, which KL had at fabulous prices; in fact, our house fizz at that time was Carte Rouge (and the rosé). When they were picked up by Domaine Select the same thing happened.

Gee, I remember the same thing with Rougeard once LDM took over. Bastards!

It wasn't just a K&L thing. Some of mine came from K&L but I also have purchases from
Garagiste, $59.94 in 2009
Sokolin, $55.16 in 2008
Heights (Brooklyn), $64.94 in 2007
