Rioja Porn

Some Rioja bottle porn for your viewing pleasure. Just got in a bunch of cool old Rioja for me and some of the usual suspects and am marveling at the labels, some of which I'm unfamiliar with. That '55 Bilbainas label is really cool. Certainly moves onto my top ten coolest label list.

Can I take the bottles owned by Dougherty and Coad? Clearly, if they don't remember owning '64 Huet, they wont miss a few Cune and La Rioja Alta...

The '55 Bilbainas label is very cool. The other Bilbainas "Vina Pomal" label and LRA Albina label have not changed much.

The Bilbao is sweet. Is that the same as the current Ramon Bilbao, or...?

Who are the "Reserve Especial" from the third photo and "Conde de Haro" from the forth? Paternina?

I was there this morning, and saw this incredible collection with my own eyes! I can confirm there is no photo shop involved. It was a sight to behold.

Not sure on the Bilbainas. I don't believe I've ever tried a wine from them.

The Reserva Especial bottling is a '47 from Bodegas Palcio and the Conde de Haro is a '73 Gran Reserva from Muga. Interestingly, on the bottom of the label it says it's bottled exclusively for American Express. I've liked every Rioja I've tried from '73, so I figured it was worth a try.

Yeah, '73 Rioja rules.

Surely you mean Palacio?

Bilbainas Vina Pomal was a long time favorite of mine. A few vintages back, it modernized, but the wine is still quality and dirt cheap.

Conde de Haro is now a brand used by Muga for their cava bubbly. In the old days it was their Torre Muga or Aro of the time. Some of us miscreants believe that the better Torre Muga vintages will age as well as the better Conde de Haro. Bodegas Bilbanas has two traditional cuves like most of the old houses (more powerful Via Pomal in the Burgundy bottle, more elegant 'Rioja fino', Via Zaco, in the Bordeaux bottle) and it also has now one of the modern-style wines, La Vicalanda, which hasn't been wildly successful. The Vendimia Especial used to be their, indeed, special top-end wine, just like Conde de Haro.

Thanks for that, Victor. Very helpful.

Know anything about the Martinez Lacuesta- Campeador, Palacio Reserva Especial or the La Rioja Alta Marques de Haro and what their aging curves are like? All good fills and colors. Also, any tn on the '25 Marques de Riscal Reserva ?

Brad,

Did Little Joe show up on your doorstep yet? If not, it must be the snowstorm that is holding him back.

I've already warned the doormen about him. They're good at keeping the riff raff out.

Things are going to need to get more explicit for this porn to really excite things.

How about opening some bottles and giving us a 'peek' at the goods inside.

In due time. They just got here from Spain, so I want to let them sit at least a month.

Make sure they have a supply of paper bags to help deal with the hyperventilation. Apply internet winkie of choice here.

Isn't it cool? I've spent most of the afternoon just coming up with increasingly complicated nonsensical things and PREVIEWING PREVIEWING PREVIEWING them to death!
