What are you binge-watching this (or last) holiday weekend?

Try real maple syrup for the persistent cold. A teaspoon or two a few times a day. Let it linger in your throat. Worked for me.

British actors are trained to do dialects and accents. Even a journeyman actor can do an acceptable American accent. The reverse just isn't the case. Only Americans with a natural ear for doing accents can do English accents.

I don't know about that -- David Tennant's American accent in Gracepoint was pretty bad.

Laurie, Lewis, and Fassbender have great ears for accents, but there are not too many other British/Irish actors that can do accents at that level. (And no one is as good as Peter Sellers was)

Growing up in England with an American mother I would say that most of the American accents were terrible. They may use coaches more now, not just faking it.

I'll try again: Black Mirror!

BBC series, stand-alone episode format like the Twilight Zone, streaming on Netflix.* Some of the best sci-fi ever put on TV, or anywhere else. Just brilliant. Because of word-of-mouth success Netflix has picked it up and will produce new episodes.

* The special "White Christmas" episode, which is devastatingly great, is not on Netflix but a version with Spanish subtitles is on YouTube.

Making a Murderer - Both reaffirms my prejudices for the Fly Over States and my now desire to be called for jury duty so I can set them all free. It will be quite interesting to see how this plays against the OJ series.

The Affair - For Ruth Wilson, sorely missed in the latest installment of Luther (though I hear she will be back for a special episode)

White Christmas is now on Netflix.

Just finished Justified. On my knees.

Listening to this interview with Walton Goggins, but let me rant (perhaps not for the first time): Terry Gross is awful. He's great, though.

With Goggins and Oliphant, the show has two great antagonists in lead roles. I got ground down after the first two seasons with the increasingly sensational violence and repetative permutations of self-similar plot elements - truly, a murder of Crowes. Supporting cast are also pretty great, too, however. Much quality here.

I've started watching The Mindy Project, on Maureen's recommendation - very charming, also witty. Nice ensemble.

Going more for comedy these days than the old ultra-violence - enough of that fare gratis daily in the news for my ageing sensibilities.

David Lindley, an American living treasure.

Younger David Lindley ripping up Mercury Blues, some amazing slide, especially around 2:50:

David Lindley & Jackson Browne reunion tour, famous song done acoustic:

Here's the same song in 1978:

After a pretty intro, Dave shows how you can lay down serious rock-steady rhythm with just two people:

This one gives you kind of the flavor of a recent concert in Berkeley. Goofy stories, followed by dazzling guitar work:

David & Bonnie; they really seem to enjoy and appreciate each other: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoA_f7H-g1Y

David Lindley was living in Claremont while I was a student there. He'd perform solo sometimes and at other times with El Rayo X. Fun times.

Saw him solo in December at Freight and Salvage in Berkeley. Still fun. I do miss the wild slide from El Rayo days though.
