I spent much more time schmoozing than tasting today at the Bowler portfolio gig, but the '14 Jalousie and Clos Papillon were probably my two biggest pleasurable surprises. A few years ago, Evelyne De Jessey had mentioned to me that she was picking earlier than she had been since she shifted around '98 or '99. Well, there have been some difficult vintages since, so we really haven't seen the full effect, but these '14s were something else. Tremendous depth, intensity, minerality and, something that has unfortunately been lacking for awhile, freshness. The fruit is much more vibrant yellow and less ripe orchard/stone fruits. Absolutely delicious wines. I have to say, the last time I bought the Clos Papillon it was $19.99, so there's a little sticker shock, but these are my favorite wines from the domaine since 2002.
