2014 from Closel

I spent much more time schmoozing than tasting today at the Bowler portfolio gig, but the '14 Jalousie and Clos Papillon were probably my two biggest pleasurable surprises. A few years ago, Evelyne De Jessey had mentioned to me that she was picking earlier than she had been since she shifted around '98 or '99. Well, there have been some difficult vintages since, so we really haven't seen the full effect, but these '14s were something else. Tremendous depth, intensity, minerality and, something that has unfortunately been lacking for awhile, freshness. The fruit is much more vibrant yellow and less ripe orchard/stone fruits. Absolutely delicious wines. I have to say, the last time I bought the Clos Papillon it was $19.99, so there's a little sticker shock, but these are my favorite wines from the domaine since 2002.

speaking of 2014 loire chenin, the 2014 huets are really turning heads, and the ones that i've had support that excitement.

i can't wait for the 2014 chidaines.

Nice. I haven't followed their wines every vintage, but something inbetween the older style and the 2000s switch to ripeness is probably optimal.

Pinon's '14s are also super.

I was a little surprised by how the '14 Cazin Cuvee Renaissance showed, though. It was quite soft upfront and I was hoping for a more acidic kick throughout. I'll give it another go when the bottles start hitting the shelves, but I have to confess, I had higher hopes for it.

I have some Pinon '14 arriving Thursday, including the sparkling (although not sure what vintage the Brut is from).

I have enjoyed the '14 Chidaines I've tried so far. 2 bottles of the drier cuvees have been very nice.

Good to hear, Marc. My buying pattern mirrors your own.

Pinon said the Brut he was pouring at the Louis/Dressner Tasting was from 2012.

That was major yums thanks to its 9 g/l.

Btw, he was also pouring a new sparkler that's a 50/50 blend of cot and grolleau that was also quite good.
