Ga-ga wine!

Informed the dinner was to be rack of lamb, scallions and new/purple potatoes, collard greens, then Irish goat cheese and pear...what to serve. And then it came to me...

Domaine du Pegau Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Reservee '99 -- Dark almost inky red, pungent very full aromatics, elixir/lushness supreme, full and robust and complex but with elements of finesse, kept on keeping on, drink now or virtually whenever. Really fine, almost beyond the scale of the right adjectives given the dinner it was paired with.

Nice match. I just ate lamb rib chops with roasted peppers and orzo; I poured Elio Sandri 2007 Barolo: young and fruity, it shuts down a bit after opening but it's still beautifully pure, more red-fruity than black, with a tannic ghost that haunts my mouth well after the fruit has left.

Had another near-ga-ga moment!

What to serve with crawfish pie and green salad!?!

Ridge Lytton Springs Zin '09 -- Dark red, beautiful bouquet with (blue?)berries, luscious on palate, no edges, all components in balance, full, flavorful, delicious, fine length, still making good old bones.

Just the right choice!

And, couldn't resist throwing in butterfingers for dessert...Zin and chocolate pair together so well.

Love that '99 Pegau and a great match with lamb. Zinfandel with Crayfish and a green salad, though? Not a match I would ever contemplate, even if I was being waterboarded, but different strokes for different strokes.

Brad, the crawfish pie had a slight tomato element along with various other condiments e.g. peppers, etc., plus a small, but readily evident sampling of spice. To me, a Zin is one of the few wines that can handle such a dish, especially given the tomato nuances. The salad was almost an afterthought.

Personally, I can't think of a better pairing, especially given my penchant for Zins.

[EDITED TO ADD] Not to mention the chocolate finishing touch with the Zin!

We did ours a bit differently so ours looked quite different; even so, this will give an idea of what we had...
