'99 Chevillon Perrieres

With progeny away at a sleepover, I prepared a meal for 2 of smoked quail with shiitake risotto and sautéed green beans. Jean chose the title wine to go with it and it was a magical choice. The wine itself refused to sit still for us, at one moment light, spicy and perfumed; at another, deep and darkly fruited. The risotto brought out an earthy element but it really shone when paired with the quail. The one flaw I felt was a bit of alcoholic heat in the nose. Certainly this wasn't the most complex wine I've encountered, but a most pleasurable bottle.

I assume you would have opened such a wine with your son at home. But perhaps would have needed a different meal?

Bingo. He'd eat the quail without hesitation, but the rest of the meal would be a non-starter. Wine with dinner is a regular feature (but not '99 Chevillon on a regular basis, alas)

Wait, what, why not to eat shiitake risotto?

Although his tastes are quite broad when it comes to protein, he's still of the mindset that rejects mixtures of all sorts. He likes steamed rice but not risotto. He'll eat pasta as long as it's unsauced, etc. the one chink in the facade is his recent discovery of barbecue and Jamaican jerk chicken but it's slow progress.

All right, ML, I am rising to this fascinating bait. "Still of the mindset"...? I haven't met people (yout's, as it were) who reject mixtures. Is this a "thing"? Is this something one ostensibly grows out of?

What is this thing, and how does it manifest?

Many perplexèd thanks.

You've obviously led a sheltered life, winegrrrrl. It's a common phenotype of childhood to reject mixtures, even mixtures of foods that are fault-free in isolation. Viz tonight's repast: he scarfed down his two venison chops (med rare) and then ate his steamed rice aside from those grains that had come in contact with the juices of the chops, juices that he loves. Go figger.

I feel your pain, O. In my previous discussion, I completely neglected the universal exception to the rule: pizza. The boy who deconstructs tacos and sandwiches nonetheless eats pizza gladly, as do most other picky eaters.

This is hilarious, because I have no idea what is going on in this thread, but I... um... when eating a pizza with toppings cannot but take off the topping, eat topping with a bit of torn-off crust and then when no more remain eat the pizza with its mozz and sauce as god intended.

Cannot believe he is now five!

In a month, but yeah! In a completely self-starting way, he's been spending the entire summer vacation learning the names of planets, stars and galaxies, as well as all the body's organs and their functions, and deep sea fishes, like the astonishing Angler Fish. All courtesy of youtube, one video linking to the next, sometimes in Russian or German. I had no idea that there is a dwarf planet called Makemake.

Holy crap, O! Please bring him back to NY; I remember when he was just a charmer in a stroller at Racines (or exploring fossil fireplaces in the district).

Perhaps you are reaching the other 'nile' age? They resemble each other somewhat....

At least you don't eat pizza from the crust inward to the point. Do you?
