Dem old bottulls

Tonight's dinner is NY strip steaks seared in a cast iron pan, with baked potatoes and a brussels sprouts - mushrooms - red pepper saute. I opened Antano 2004 Montefalco Sagrantino but it was corked. Aaugh. Nice wine under the taint, too.

So, instead, I sub in the Borgogno 1971 Dolcetto d'Alba: sour for the first few minutes but then the wine rallies... muted florals, darkest red (or maybe blue) fruits, earth and a drop of asphalt, tannins are mild but still trying desperately to assert themselves; intellectual wine.

What old bottle did you open recently?

JJ Prüm 1993 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese (A.P. #21 96) Spritzig! Lime and dried apples. It was past the petrol phase. A somewhat quiet and contemplative bottle, that shone on its own, and seemed to demand one's undivided attention. A terrific, mature bottle of Prüm.

Singing old dolcetto...now I've heard everything.

Had a 2000 Salvatore Molettieri "Vigna Cinque Querce" Taurasi Riserva that was (duh!) still too young. And then a Guibertau 2010 Samur blanc which felt, sadly, going downslope. Alas.

Had the '96 last week and it was, an hour after opening, quite expressive.

1998 Trimbach Riesling Vendanges Tardives - crystalline, pure, crazy freshness, in marvelous balance and form. Burnished peachiness and great length. Ka-pow!

I've greatly enjoyed a couple of Einaudi's 1998 Dolcetti in the past year or so (the base Dolcetto di Dogliani and the Vigna Tecc, IIRC). Pecchenino's from the same time period haven't fared as well.

Tonight was the 1964 Cordero di Montezemolo Barolo Monfalletto. Cannot say that I have a ton of experience with these wines to compare them to other bottles, but it was a very nice and silky feather of a wine. A bit richer than I expected from reading about reports of this being pale orange. But I'm sure each bottle is different. And it was still mainly about the silk silk silky feather.

My only critique would be a noticeable twinge of rancio on the finish at times. But I suppose that is to be expected. All in all, a good way to end the week.

Not really that old but in a perfect spot tonight - 02 drouhin clos des mouches (rouges).

Unfortunately my case of Drouhin's Beaune Greves 02 is now gone but it really was ravishingly complete and knocked impatiently on the door of greatness.

Tom, I'm surprised you would drink all of your case without giving at least a few bottles some additional time in their life cycle.

Maybe I should up the priority on consuming my 2002s!?!

. . . . . Pete
