I admire what he did for Beaujolais, but I hated his wines. Because, for a long time, they were the only Beaulolais I knew, I thought I hated Beaujolais until Bob Semon opened a bottle of, I think, Thivin and I discovered that not all Beaujolais tasted like Banana Splits. But a lot of people disagreed with me.

A wistful, sad moment on learning this. Duboeuf was part of my vinous infancy. An economic engine and Mondavi-esque in his influence on Beaujolais.

Yes, yes, the banana-ester yeast was dreadful but he made wine before that and after that. I recall very early one morning in a Minneapolis parking lot -- don't ask -- when I found one of his later bottlings to be decent.

I liked them too, and I thought his Maconnais wines and brief foray into the Rhone were good value. Although with the caveat that I haven't had one in years. (Duboeuf distribution is spotty here on the left coast.)
