Georges Duboeuf passes

Besides tributes for his wine-making, advocacy, and gentlemanliness, his Duboeuf men's ties are terrific.

A very talented man.

A great wine-maker, wine advocate, and gentleman.

Thirty million French bottles a year can't be wrong!

To quote the late Joe Dressner, “thermovinification.” He was an important economic force for the region., however.

I admire what he did for Beaujolais, but I hated his wines. Because, for a long time, they were the only Beaulolais I knew, I thought I hated Beaujolais until Bob Semon opened a bottle of, I think, Thivin and I discovered that not all Beaujolais tasted like Banana Splits. But a lot of people disagreed with me.

Yes, yes, the banana-ester yeast was dreadful but he made wine before that and after that. I recall very early one morning in a Minneapolis parking lot -- don't ask -- when I found one of his later bottlings to be decent.

Last bottle of 1989 Fleurie, consumed two years ago, was superb.
The flower label they call it.

You never cease to amaze me, Tovarisch.

OK OK, it wasn't Chamonard.

But you will be amused to know then, that I bought it on release and kept it this long.

A magnificent gesture of optimism and patience. I am assuming for the nonce that you didn't lay down a case and revisit it every few years?

Many of the domaine wines for which he was a negocient, like the Jean Ernest Descombes Morgon, are excellent.

I liked them too, and I thought his Maconnais wines and brief foray into the Rhone were good value. Although with the caveat that I haven't had one in years. (Duboeuf distribution is spotty here on the left coast.)
