TN: Manuel in the Cellar (Nov 1, 2014)

The most radical change chez Olga was around '95 or '96 when they started bottling a complete wine rather than leaving it in vat and bottling on demand. When the daughter (i.e., Olga's granddaughter) and her husband took over the domaine, they gradually made a few changes, upgrading equipment...

My faith was restored in Clos des Briords 2000 tonight. The thread is alive.

Two reasons why you should age your wine

Not enough travel on my part. Though I could use a good haircut. Last week I had a bottle of '99 Domaine Diochon Moulin-a-Vent, which kept on opening and opening and opening up all evening long.

Two reasons why you should age your wine

Two wines, old school in their own right, well-aged. Domaine du Closel Savennières Cuvée Spéciale 1994. Makes the case for aging Savennières, giving it twenty years. Sometimes it doesn't work out so well, nut I've never had a problem with this wine. This one is upright, rich, laden and long...

The other wines on my doorstep

How did the four wines fare on the Morissette seven day test? Chinon Beaumont was disqualified after the fourth day for "bottle empty". La Ritournelle failed on day six for having lost its fruit and its length. La Dilettante passed with flying colours, and would be a candidate for the...

    Muscadet and Moulin-à-Vent

Two wines that could be stitched into the main thread, or an auxiliary thread, but here they are on the loose. Domaine Luneau-Papin Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine sur lie "Les Pierres Blanches Vieilles Vignes" 2002. Young and fresh, vibrant and full of flavour. Holding well and promising for the...

The other wines on my doorstep

These bottles, all about half full, with corks, were on my doorstep for two days. A great thing to come home to. All from Catherine et Pierre Breton, La Ritournelle, Bourgueil Rosé 2013, La Dilettante Vouvray Sec 2013, and Chinon Beaumont 2012. Obviously I have nothing to say about their...

Just got home to find someone had left a half a bottle of Moussamoussettes on my doorstep. Sitting open for two days on my doorstep, it was totally flat of course, but oh so delicious. Still has verve and the flavours are joyous. Happy Thanksgiving, indeed.

Maybe if the Save me and the wine I drank thread had a bit more of that João in Kansas spirit. Or was just a bit more frayed.
