EPL Season

The jokes about Muller amidst the small circle of Bayern fans here never stop. A favourite pastime. David Byrne should write a song about him.

But a source close to the team (email me for details if interested) has recently revealed that our jokes border on truth - that he is often intentionally left out of the finer points of the game plan, and allowed to roam around with nothing but his intuition in pocket.

and then this crazy shit

Seriously, those were two pretty games.

upon reflection, one of my favourite things about the first game was that Barca actually took the Ribery bait. Good for Jupp, and good for Franck. Even when he was stepping out to make a quick phone call to Zahia Dehar during a throw-in, he was accompanied by 3 Barca guys.

i can't be bothered to quote teh shitz an all, but müller is a thing. his own thing. he is a technically weak, often unconfident player with a remarkable positional intelligence.

he is an oddity in today's game (and i confess, i enjoy mocking teh thomas - *fistpump!*). but in a way, barca are his ideal opponents: most likely to ask whether he can do 100,000 keepy ups and kill a ball with teh chest, and least likely to wonder whether this goof might have an unappreciated ability to kill you.

I played with a guy like this, except he maybe had a bit more speed. You had no idea whether he'd control your pass, or what he would do with the ball, but he popped up in the damndest places and at crucial times. A guy you'd never pick for 5-a-side, but great in matches. Crazy.

I'm looking forward to watching Dortmund and re-watching Bayern with a close eye.

Other than Arsenal being there, I don't think you could ask for more out of a semi.

Pep who?

BTW, I've been thinking that the reason that Pep ended up at Bayern is not to turn them into Barca North. Rather, I think he relishes the challenge of a different historical style, he sees that the end is near for tiki-taka, and the way Bayern plays hews more closely to the Barca teams that he captained.

Just random thoughts.

Some Bayern players agree with your assessment, apparently.

so you are not going to tell UEFA to conduct actual random draws instead?

I've watched the Bayern game twice, which was a good thing as it turned out; too nervous to pay attention live.

I ended up missing half of the Dortmund game, at various stages, so I will give that a spin as well.

A choice quote from a piece by Gab Marcotti:

It was spring 2007.

A scout for a well-known European team went to see Bayern Munich's under-19 side. His job was to evaluate half a dozen players on the pitch that day and write up a little report. Among them was Thomas Mueller, who was enjoying a free-scoring season.

"He scored once and came close several times that day," he told me recently. "But what I remember most was how I killed him in my report.

"[Mueller] was uncoordinated, ugly to watch. He'd try to trap the ball and it would bounce three meters away. He was always in a hurry, always scrambling, like a guy who was terrified to make a mistake. In my experience, guys like that don't have a future in the top flight.

"Looking back, I guess it wasn't my finest hour, eh?" he added.

Damn, and I thought I was doing some original thinking...

Just like work, I suppose.

In response to various reports regarding Robert Lewandowski, FC Bayern issues the following statement: contrary to these reports, FC Bayern has no contract with Robert Lewandowski.

Issued for information.

"We have one of the best disciplinary records in the country. For Man Utd to have five players booked, I don't think that's right."

I am still trying to work this one out. Or not.

EPL top 4 raceCan someone do the math for me?

no.

fb.

what else are you guys good for, being 450km from Dortmund and 250 from Munchen?

OK, a quick back of the envelope.

Arsenal have 3 games remaining, QPR(A), Wigan(H), Newcastle(A). If you give us a 75% chance to win each match, then we have an expected value of 6.75 points.

Tottenham have Southhampton(A, 60%), Chelsea (A, 40%), Stoke (A, 60%), Sunderland (H, 75%) for an expected value of 7.05 points.

Chelsea have ManU (A, 40%), Tottenham (H, 60%), Villa (A, 75%), Everton (H, 60%) for an expected value of 7.05 points.

That means:

Chelsea 72.05 points
Arsenal 70.75 points
Tottenham 69.05 points

Doesn't really help much, does it.

correct me please, but you have an underlying assumption that all games have a loss vs draw weights that are linearly predetermined by chances of victory, no?

You could argue , for example , that Chelsky has a low chance of beating Everton but also a low chance of losing.
