Expect some new faces- The Parker/Squire's Board goes subscription only

No one was ripped off. On the Internet, once you let the words go, they belong to everyone. Copyright protections are part of a later implementation.

In re Parker and his brand... I enjoy a train wreck as much as the next fellow, but, as I'm not an investor, I don't really care.

In re Squires and the board... I'd like copies of a few postings that were there but I can live without them, too.

Yes, old notes on WLDG and WT have value because often they are the _only_ notes available on a particular wine.

What Sharon said, in spades.

I'm disappointed with you, Brad: Why do you want every place to be the same? Why do you want RP-style posts and CT-style notes here?

To both Jay and Brad: I'm sure there were 2 or 3 wonderful people over there but the place stank so it wasn't worth it to me. (Care to come with me to a really really good, really really noisy restaurant?)

I'm sure we'll be more than happy to oblige.

Pete, I'm sure you could find answers to your questions over on that forum.

Thor, I looked and was unable to learn who started and runs that board.

. . . . Pete

Todd French, who lasted a day here in January '09, before he was run out of town.

I bet email would work.

Jeff, I don't think that's fair. I don't think Brad wants this board to look like all the others. First, as Jay reminded us, it's just not that interesting to the masses, nor to the pointy wine drinking crowd. Second, it's got a strong and established enough personality that it will never be appealing to many who don't share that sensibility, and it can weather brief experiences with those who are more stubborn about not getting it. And third, I really don't understand the NIMBYism. We've all been newbies somewhere. The wine internet survived Yixin's arrival, and it survived Tom Troiano's departure, and Disorder will be just fine if some small handful of refugees decide they like this place more than another. That's all it will ever be: a small handful.

Oh, I'm sure they're on a sound legal footing. But the "thanks for all the great content, now you can pay to read it" position is, shall we say, ungracious.

Who wants everything to be the same? I don't, but I'd like this wine board to be more than a dozen people who discuss Kant as much as wine.

What bothers me the most is how unwelcoming and exclusive this board can be. How would you like it if you were told you weren't welcomed here because you're gay and wear glasses? Well, many people here send out the message to newbies that they don't belong here because they're too fucking stupid and drink wine many here find objectionable and I don't see much difference between either form of bigotry.

New blood is good and this board would benefit from some.

Yes it is, but if someone really valued the content they would pay the subscription fee.

These Internet boards are a social network and entertaining but the content itself (particularly my own posts) has little value to me. Remember when the New York Times tried to charge for content? And they even have editors. Allegedly.

None of this is meant as an insult to anyone, I enjoy this place greatly, but all were doing is chatting.

And it's 10:30 am on a Tuesday, we should all be working anyway.

I think I said that. But I was including you here and Thor and well lots of others on lots of other topics.

If it helps, I can launch another argument about matters sensory or artistic with Jonathan, but I don't want him to have too many irons in the fire at once. Best to reserve this sort of thing for when it's most needed.

Thor: I am sorry if my statement came off as NIMBY. I think this board is in trouble if 100 eBob'ers appear here and decide to stay. (Things usually don't go well for the indigenous peoples.)

Joe: "Ungracious" is putting it mildly.

Brad: I'm glad I'm wrong. I agree that new blood is good. I hope it isn't the kind that made Squires a pit... childish, insulting, etc.

Thor expressed my point of view quite eloquently.

Jeff - you are painting the posters on the Squires board with a very broad brush. There were any number of intelligent knowledgeable people posting there (which is something that I can say as someone who *did* read the board.). And let us not forget that the people who can't post there any more are somewhat self-selecting as not being WA subscribers.

regarding losses there were any number of interesting discussions and tasting notes (off the top of my head I deeply regret the loss of Jesus Barquin's notes on Sherry and Robert Thornton's discussions on Burgundy). Also I had various contacts only through PM on that board which are now gone.

The people who want to talk about Cal Cabs and Shiraz will migrate to Berserkers but there are any number of people who would add to this board.

I believe it says somewhere on the Squire's Board that they actually hold the copyright or intellectual property or whatever once you post there. I saw that once in regard to a posting on my own Blog. So I think they do not think there is any need to allow people to withdraw their content, since they own it already...

I think this board is in trouble if 100 eBob'ers appear here and decide to stay.
But what on Coad's green earth would make you think that this would happen? Our reputation does precede us. And you know, we have picked up people along the way, with few ill effects. Some of them make a home here, others get their Beaujolais talk out here and leave the Santa Rita Hills chat for other venues. But anyone taking a look at this board for more than a minute is going to realize pretty quickly that it either is or isn't for them.

'Pretty broad brush your painting with there, Brad. We have our share of hard cases but we also have a fairly reasonable group of regulars.
But even I will admit that a post that wants to know what your drinking for Friday or your wines of the year sets off my avoidance attitude.
Best, Jim
