Latest Marcassin mailer

actually, the 06 drcs really do taste like stemmy crap right now.

in time they will turn into wines that will please many people, even some whose opinions i respect (albeit that i, with my own perverse ideals, will most likely always bitch about them for being coarse and slightly overblown).

otoh, marcassin always smells and tastes like prodigious bullshit made for newbs.

may as well talk it up if that's all you have to sell, i guess.

fb.

To be honest, this has made me really curious about the wines - I once had a Chardonnay which wasn't too bad. Not sure I will shell out that sort of money, though - Joe, give me a call if you get an invite.

I don't think I've ever had a Marcassin.

Though, if they are usually "prodigious," I should probably wait until someone else is buying.
Actually it was at the French Laundry a few years ago. I was with a very CA influenced group so my only comment at the time was WOW without any further vocal opinion. Very typical big CA chard, ok if that's your cup of tea.

Oh, Lou, I am not man enough to taste the chard, I was thinking of the PN.

Anyone with a palate of steel can drink the "pinot", only the extremely brave warriors with tremendous gustatory reflexes chance the chard. A brave man dies only once a vino coward a etc etc. My apologies to Shakespeare

I tasted a Marcassin Chardonnay some years ago, when it was only spoken of in hushed tones by the Midwest wine cognoscenti and the palate memory still lingers. I recall it tasting somewhat like liquid lumberyard, not much else. After that, I never felt I needed to bother with the Pinot Noir.

Josefa!

Fuck you!

And thanks for sharing your horrifying personal experiences with the group.

Several years ago, I was having dinner at A16 with Thor and Theresa. The table next to us we're high-rollin', CA wine types. A glass of Marcassin Chard ('02 Three Sisters, perhaps?, a bit of a SWAG) was given to us.

I've had worse (damning with faint praise). Just kind of ordinary.

Man, I'm at the wrong university. I need one of them DRC level faculty positions.

Or maybe I just need to be better at my job and then I'd be at DRC level.

I think this should be a jeebus theme the next time you are in the states. Drink a few Marcassin and see what's what. I've only had passing tastes here and there and couldn't tell you vintage (nor variety, from what I tasted).

Some of the pinots and chardonnay Helen Turley made for Martinelli were kind of nice. The vineyards are close to each other in Sonoma County.
On the other hand, she may also have a hand in the Martinelli Giuseppe & Luisa zinfandel, which pretty much tasted like paint thinner to me. A perennial 95-pointer from Parker.
