NWR: Seattle

Looking for some wine store recommendations.

Is Pike Place Market worth going to?

Any views on The Whale Wins restaurant? Looking for something delicous but not too fancy.

Can you eat at the bar at Canlis?

Going to the Willows Inn the following night.

Pike Place is worth a quick stroll. A friend swears by a salmon rub from Market Spice, so you could buy that, look over as a guy throws fish, and then leave. I can't imagine doing better than smoked salmon and a roast chicken from Le Pichet. We also hit a delicious sandwich place in Pioneer Square and ate super fresh sashimi with nominal atmosphere at a place called Shiki near Key Arena. Besides food, Eliott Bay Books is one of the five best bookstores I've ever visited.

Wine stores in Seattle are ok. Likely won't see anything you wouldn't find in NYC. My fave is McCarthy and Scheiring. Pike and Western in the market is enjoyable. It's all coming from the same importers, so....

You can eat in the Canlis bar. The list is good and the building is cool. Take note of the Tsutukawa door handles.

My favorite places to eat in Seattle are Sitka and Spruce and Crush. They are not too fancy. S and S less so (fancy).

The Whale Wins is fine.

Get take out from Revel, get a good bottle or two of a demisec Alsatian or some such, and have a picnic on the side of the Ship Canal, preferably in the sun.

Why aren't you requesting a Seattle jeeb - THAT is the big question. That said, we leave for two weeks of vacation in two days.

Ignore comments from visitors. They know nothing. Listen to the natives. We are many.

If you eat at Sitka (which is great), you can pick up some bottles at Bar Ferdinand, which is next door and has some disorderly stuff. It'll save you time if you can't hit another wine store.

I know nothing of Vif.

And yet it is less than a half mile from my house.

I am intrigued.

Shawn Mead and Lauren Feldman are the proprietors. Shawn was the west coast sales director for Louis/Dressner. Lauren baked and cooked at a bunch of places and would always cater the annual LDM trade tasting.

I haven't been yet, but if it is anything other than awesome, I'll be shocked.

The Walrus and Carpenter is a place I like a lot.

Pichet, of course.

Oh, and I get local privileges in Seattle. [G]

Thanks everyone. We are only in Seattle for a day prior to a week on Lummi Island.
Excellent prioritizing!

When are you coming out?
I and some other disorderlies live across the bay from Lummi Island.
Maybe we can still have a jeeb.

Shawn Mead has a retail wine shop in Seattle!
VLM that news made my day.
This is very awesome.

Sharon, what are you waiting for?
We are having the best summer weather in probably 50 years out here.
Of course the rains started up yesterday, but that just means chanterelles will be popping soon.

Yes, VLM gets native status.

And here Shawn and Lauren open a wine shop actually more like 1/4 mile from us and I am clueless.

Ignore me. I am nothing.

What is it about Lummi Island?

I had Dutch visitors last year and they made a beeline there. And I seem to recall Brian C getting excited about kayaking there.

The kayaking is just fine around Lummi, as it is in all of the San Juans, but people are going there for the chef at the Willows, I'm guessing.

I tried to get you and L to come and see for yourselves, but life gets in the way sometimes.

Yeah, kayaking around Orcas and Whidbey islands doesn't suck, either, especially when it affords one the opportunity to scoop renegade oysters (escaped from the oyster farms) off the floor of the Sound and take 'em home to eat.

OMG, all of my relatives live on Lummi Island and I have never been there.

Wow for an Island with a population of 800 people everyone seems to know someone there.

The Willows Inn was clearly the main attraction but the more I read it seemed perfect for a week. We are staying in a cabin on a farm with a commercial kitchen.
