What did you drink tonight?

Buncha nice stuff tonight. 2001 Nigl Riesling Privat from magnum outperformed expectations.

Other, more famous, stuff met expectations.

F Esmonin Chambertin 2007 and Lavaux 2010, both nice, traditional Burgs and finishing a Pontet-Canet 2000, drinking very well.

Cheers, Howard

good Burgs, Howard, they don't get enough respect around here

2007 Ameztoi Getariako Txakolina, alc 10.5....good an prickly...more mature color...really still drinking well

another "lost in the cellar" wine

2011 Montesecondo Chianti Classico: Probably too young, pretty nice, fresh, good tannins & fruit, some depth and a hint of complexity to come. Nothing wrong here, but I can't seem to love this wine as some afficionados do, even as Chianti.

2006 Chandon de Briailles Savigny les Beaune Fourneaux: a modest, discreet beauty, with a nice tannic rub, fine acidity, and just enough fruit to balance. Surprised this bottle has turned out this well, as it was not attractive younger. Wouldn't compare well with a great bottle, but I have enough monuments from 2005 to scrape by with.

2008 de Villaine Rully St. Jacques: with air, fine and intense, minerally, modest fruit flavors. The first night, I thought it was tired, but the way the remainder developed overnight led me to think it may just be snoozing.

2001 in Austria turned out better than I'd have thought.

This surprises me. At the time they were released, IIRC, the conventional view was that they showed more promise than either the '97 or '99s, at least chez Knoll, FXP, Altzinger, Prager and Hirtzberger, and they were hyped accordingly. Did you have bad early early experiences with '01, Jim?

Kirk,
I did not read much hype about 2001 on release; everyone seemed fixated on 1999 then. Perhaps, you were more informed than I. No matter, they are quite nice now.
Best, Jim

MaV, Trois Roches was open for business. Really nice. Obviously still young, but the richness of the vintage makes it very approachable. Starting to show some complexity.

No, I don't think it's too young. It showed great last night at our LDM wine dinner, the room went gaga over it. You just might not like it, which is fine. I find that I don't really like too much else, except for a racist Chianti, that I will no longer purchase.

2011 Baudry Clos Guillot also showed well, although we did notice some bottle variation as at least one bottle seemed to be more reduced than others.

The ever generous mark e bought a bottle of 2002 Baudry Grézeaux off the reserve list to share and it was everything one would hope for from this wine. Silky, pure, resolved, elegant and distinctly Grézeaux. If this wine gets any better, the bottle won't be able to contain the joy.

How can a Chianti be racist?

Like this.

For my recent drinking, I've really been digging a few that VLM knows, the 2012 Karthauserhof Kabinett (one of the few 2012 Germans that I've had, but certainly enough to make me giddy about the vintage expression), and the 2011 Texier St. Alban, lovely lovely lovely.

huh, so maybe my first 09 beaujolais retrospective isn't as far off as I thought?

btw, Kirk, have you reserved a seat for that yet (by contributing yet another champagne I've never even heard of, that is) ?

Thrilled to hear this, because I am a huge fan of the estate.
This wasn't one of the few that they had picked on October 1st, two weeks ahead of the rest of the world, and had to de-acidify, then?
I was wondering how the wines would recover, from what I thought was a weird state in March of 2013. The Kab in particular could have been a feinherb served blind back then, which in itself is by no means a criticism, but that bit of sweetness was fighting its way back into the wine ( according to my barely readable note ).

Wow, I had no knowledge of the production, but interesting to hear.

I've had two bottles in the past two weeks and both have been far from feinherb in my estimation. Definitely round sweetness in these bottles, and some perceptible sugar to hang on your tongue, but not to the level of the modern spatlese, so the raciness and the verve were perfect for drinking. I ordered more last night.

That's pretty shocking. I talked to the guy briefly at a tasting, and he seemed like a nice guy at the time. Very disappointing.

A '12 on Monday was the it.

The only overt racism I know of was old man Montille. AFAIK, the kids are alright.
