Dinner at Racines

What a wonderful restaurant/wine bar!

The wine list is a dream, the food was delicious, the service was friendly, welcoming and professional, the room is modern, lovely and relaxing and the noise level is comfortable!

The amuse bouche was a nice vibrant wake up, the steamed egg and cauliflower was delicious and comforting and the monkfish was fantastic. The panna cotta was good with a nice level of sweetness (i.e., not too much) but was probably the least interesting item. Or maybe I was just full by then, I only ordered dessert because everything else had been so good.

2012 Clos des Briords by the glass was served ice cold but after warming in my hands for about 10-15 minutes was its usual amazing self without me having to sacrifice one of the 2 bottles I hid away somewhere in Chelsea. Seriously, I was reorganizing my cellar this afternoon and realized I have no idea where they are.

2012 L'Arpent Rouge was, as anyone would expect, amazing.

Alice was eating at the bar when I arrived and David arrived later on. I mentioned the over-chilled Muscadet to him so hopefully that one minor problem will be resolved.

The restaurant was about half full when I arrived around 6:30 and was practically full by the time I left. Not bad for a Monday night!

By the way, as great as the btg list is the bottle list is equally impressive. Multiple vintages of CRB Gamay for one thing.

This more than made up for what had been a very frustrating day and I look forward to revisiting. I'd say go before the buzz hits but given how busy they were I may be too late.

I don't suppose you guys will leave anything for me on the wine list, by the time I make it down there in mid June?

Beautiful writeup. Smile-making.

Like that place. Can't wait to go back.

Ha!

Maybe I should buy my bottles now, to drink over the next few months. Like I do at Taillevent.

I happen to know that you are not the first to ask for this.

The poor guy doesn't have phone, internet service or internal POS system for the kitchen orders b/c of Verizon's screw ups. And now you want him to set up Réserve Privée sections of his cellar?

Oh, it wasn't me.

I'm willing to take my chances.

Did I mention the noise level is comfortable? This puts it in a very rarefied atmosphere so far as I'm concerned.

BTW - 2008 Pinon Moelleux by the glass? I know what I'm ordering for Arnold when we get there. But this time around I'll be angling for a few sips myself.

Oooh. That is a big draw for me, too, Jay. In return for that good news, I won't bust your balls for "rarified."

Oops.

But yes, it is such a pleasure to walk into a restaurant and not feel an immediate urge to turn around again.

One should be careful. Funny story about this.

Here I am dining at La Cabotte in Nuits, minding my own venison, just days before the original team was to pack up and be off to NYC, lock, stock and barrel. Friendly staff informs me that a bottle with my Friend's name on it has been sitting downstairs for a couple of years, and that they've no idea what to do with it under the circumstances. So I call the Friend in a distant land, and I am like - dude, do you want the bottle, since the wagon is pulling out of here. Drink it, he says, so I did. The wine? 1985 B-M Roumier.

Hold on just a minute. The wine's been sold out in city and state for months, and these guys are pouring it by the glass? I suspect insider dealings, and I am reporting them to the SEC. After I drink every bottle they have.

Unlike us, Sasha, they probably had the foresight to go long when the opportunity presented itself. Flash traders such as ourselves got caught with our pants down, alas.
