Isolation begins with riesling

Friday night we had friends over for delicious beers (which I provided) and crappy wine (which they provided). But apparently that kind of behavior is criminally irresponsible. So yesterday we switched to family and my last bottle of 2012 Rebholz im Sonnenschein Ganz Horn Riesling GG.

The last few bottles I've opened of this were at group dinners. They always showed well but it was nice to get a final shot at watching it slowly develop over the evening. Actually, it was more than nice. Elegant, mineral, savory, focused and fragrant. No idea how long these can age, but no regrets about drinking this last bottle when the mellowed harmony has knitted things together but the dancing minerals are still very much alive.

Overall, a lovely restrained-yet-expressive take on riesling, which is what I like so much about Rehbolz.

With next week being "Wagner Week" on the free Nightly Opera Stream from Met Opera, there will be plenty of excuses to open German Riesling.

What did you open with Onegin tonight?

We had a more simple Rebholz Riesling tonight, the 2014 Riesling "Ökonomierat". This is one step above the basic estate Riesling in the hierarchy (they make a total of 9 different dry Rieslings), an hommage to Hans-Jörg's grandfather who was the one formulating the basic ideas that still guide the winery and who had been awarded the Ökonomierat title. It is usually even drier than the others and one of my favorites for its freshness and clarity. At 6 years this drinks still like a glacier spring without the slightest signs of tiring. If you want fruit in your Riesling it is not for you. Unfortunately this is never picked up for import to the US.

Bessin 2017 VV Chablis. It matched the roast chicken better than the opera.

2017 is a home run year for chablis at the village and 1er cru level. i've had the following and they all have batted way above their pedigree.

servin a/c pargues
billaud simon a/c tete d'or
pinson a/c
servin forets
louis michel vaillons
louis michel sechets

Robert,
I have only tasted the ‘17 Louis Michel wines and I agree.
At all levels, including grand cru (although at this stage density is about all I can assess) they have been strong. And I have bought more than is my usual per vintage.
Now if I can just keep my hands off of them . . .
Best, Jim

Last night was 2018 Hofgut Falkenstein Niedermenniger Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese feinherb #11 and tonight 2018 Hofgut Falkenstein Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Kabinett #12. Both were a bit riper and rounder than their counterparts for the last few years, but only in the context of Falkenstein. Beautiful wines there maybe isn't such a thing as having too much, except one time I drank so much at a party the acidity hurt my mouth.

I recently got a few bottles of 2018 NH feinherb spätlese #3. Look forward to opening some soon. Although given how many they produce, I doubt I'll ever taste even half the versions of 2018 NH feinherb spätlese.

We upgraded to 2010 Rebholz Kastanienbusch tonight. Did not do it real justice as we finished the bottle in 15 minutes. Kastanienbusch is always a bit warmer and more fruity than the two Sonnenschein Rieslings, but it is still elegant and focused, with great balance and refreshing acidity. This was stunningly good.

I remember those times.
Should open a bottle soon. Not much else to do these days.

Tonight, I've had most of a half bottle of 2008 Le Haut-Lieu Sec, and a couple of short pours of 1998 Produttori del Barbaresco. This PdB bottle is actually graced with lovely Nebbiolo fruit, which I haven't encountered in the last two bottles I opened.

I hope everyone is and continues to stay well.

Keep washing your hands!

Bob

Where is the Like button again?

I really like the 2018s while at the same time wishing for the acid structure of the 2016s whenever I try one. Was the #11 in mag? I was lead to believe they only bottled magnums of that one.

Tonight was 2018 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett, not the last word in elegance nor as energetic as this can be, rounded out by 2018 I expect, but still quite a fine drop that didn't require much attention.

"but still quite a fine drop that didn't require much attention. "
i have always thought this about Donnhoff wines. they can be drunk so easily without thinking about them, and you catch yourself and realize how delicious and beatuiful it was.

Tonight we had the Markus Heeb 2016 Wolfer Goldgrube Kabinett. Too young and in a little but of an awkward phase, but still yummy.

Speaking of isolation, yesterday I lost 95% of my sense of smell, suggesting that the "mild flu-like cold" I've been experiencing these last two weeks under isolation is corona. I know that much more serious losses are going on but I was wondering if anyone else here lost their sense of smell too.
